The online users have spoken, so to speak, and many do not like the idea of registering to view content. A few complained about having to provide personal information or go through the steps to register. Others just stayed away.
In a recent national study, 54 percent of Internet users surveyed by the Pew Internet and American Life Project said they had never registered at a Web site in order to obtain news or information. That is a group too large to ignore; its size is one reason newspapers are relaxing registration requirements.

It also says they're killing pop up ads, limiting pop unders, and limiting flash ads to one per 6 hours (at least I hope that's what it means.)
Now if the Yankee papers would get the message. You listening, Tribune company? New York Times?
I've vowed to go get all of the Firefox ad blockers because of the flash ads on the Chicago Tribune that keeps covering up the text you're trying to read.
