Found this while trying to check the weather. Wonder how long it took him to get there?

I've been close in my Cherokee. 13,500 with plenty of room and power to climb. Alas, no oxygen, or I'd have done it too. From a starting elevation of 5800 ft, it took me about 15 minutes.

Winter is the time to do it.

He may have used orographic lift in the area like a spiral staircase.

To spiral up through the infernally heated murk to 14.5K to get to VFR over the top of a thick, IFR forest fire smoke-layer a few times took a stock SkyHawk ~15 minutes from 1300 MSL in very hot weather and there of course was not much VSI left up there.

Some performance charts for engine upgrades for the 172 list a service ceiling of 18,000.

The old 180HP STOL CE172 I use to fly would hop right up to 14000 no problem this time of year. It wanted to keep going but no oxygen so I had to stop there.
