Looks like it's time to pull the plug . Used to be a thriving group of pilots and pilot sympathizers (we even had T-shirts), but creeping apathy seems to be taking its toll :mad2:. I mention this here because this seems to be the trend in GA overall and that breaks my Jurassic heart.

Dammit, people, how can you be apathetic about flying??? :dunno::dunno::dunno:

Um, where are you at? Granted, the local group I fly with is "middle aged" with a fair amount of young and retired folks. The local grass strip gets more activity that some of the county airports though ..

Since buying a 35, I have noticed a number of others that purchased their first 35 in the same timeframe - most are working stiffs. Even have our own T-Shirt:

but, yea, things really don't look good overall...

Sorry you feel that way. Find an airport with a group of airport bums and hang out. I'm in a group with some age ,in the summer we fly sun. For breakfast and Thursday eve. For supper. Look harder, and hang in there. Are you volunteering to get the TShirt program back on line. I'm ready to buy.

Sorry, forgot to mention we're in Tyler/Jacksonville, TX.

*sigh* I sure do miss flying at an airport with an active social life.

With half of our 18 hangars full of boats, and the other half owned by out-of-town billionaires, there are only three of us locals who do any flying -- and that's just not enough to keep the social scene going...

There are 21 locals waiting for hangars... If only we were allowed to build more.

I belong to a local EAA chapter (106 out of Lawrence). There's the monthly (+-) Dawn Patrols which usually bring 5-10 people, most on wheels. There's reportedly over 200 members. Monthly meetings usually don't break 40. And try finding enough help to put on an event, even young eagles.
I think a lot of this is due to being over committed. I'm trying to get my buddy to commit to a couple of future flights but usually he waits until the day before.
On the other hand, if I don't have a flying partner, I'd just as soon stay home too.

I meet with a bunch of hangar rats every night and a beer, even on the weekends if I wanted to. Always something going on, working on this or that, repairing this or that airplane. Seems to me you have to search out like minded pilots.

How I envy you. There's almost no SE activity at my home drome (KJSO). A few bizjets and turboprops. <sigh>.

Try wearing pressed pants, a white shirt, and epaulets and nervously checking your watch, pacing around, and talking on the phone looking for you pax. Maybe you can meet up with some of the jet drivers that way.

Maybe if you had a better name. Instead of "Old Fart's Breakfast Club" try
ROMEOs

Retired Old Men Eating Out

Man, you all have it rough. Every weekend around here there is a EAA fly in. Some of the folks are retired, others are working stiffs like me.

this Friday, there is a cookout at the grass strip where I rent a hangar
On Saturday AM, I'm cooking eggs (decided it was my turn) at Carslile (4M3) - y'all come

Pretty much anytime I'm out flying, I bump into someone in their hangar and I get a close up view of experimentals, Navions, etc. There are some corporate pilots there, but the ones I know would just as soon be flying Champ as anything else....

The old geezers club here at my home airport just died off. Interesting group. There were 8 members, 6 were WW II pilots, and the other two were Korean pilots. Very interesting to sit and listen to them reminense about the old days and the good old days (war stories were not all about fighting:wink2:)

Then one year two died within a month. The next year 2 more died. Another became unable to care for himself and went away to live with kids. (passed away since) 2 more became too feeble to come to the airport and passed away. The last member died about 3 years ago, just 2 weeks after his last flight. The airport is not the same. No one goes to the airport just to sit and swap lies anymore.

Make it brunch instead of breakfast and you might have more interest. Getting up at 4AM Sunday morning is just not appealing to me personally.

Agree 100%. We actively seek out and attend only fly-in LUNCHES, or breakfasts that serve till 2 PM.

We had quite a bit of activity around my home airport this holiday weekend. On Saturday a couple homebuilders and a husband & wife team who are restoring a SuperCub were all working on their projects, even well into the heat of the afternoon. Other folks were out flying around in the morning hours before the heat got too uncomfortable. I flew a buddy down to Graham to go look at a used Porsche for sale down there, and we returned about 3PM in the blast furnace heat of the afternoon... we were the only idiots out flying around by then. On Sunday I spent all day in the hangar replacing a power window mechanism on my Audi A4, several planes were out flying around in the morning, but it got windy quickly and the flying activity stopped. Sunday evening, since it was Labor Day weekend, the airport owner threw a small party in the newly remodelled FBO building, I guess we had about 30-40 folks show up, including a meeting of the local 99's chapter, with snacks / finger food, drinks and BYOB. Monday morning at 8:30am breakfast was being served by the local EAA guys in the "big hangar" with scrambled eggs, biscuits, gravy, sausage, pancakes, fruit, cinnamon rolls, etc. About 50 folks showed up for that. Some folks went flying after breakfast but it started getting windy and hot early in the day so the flying activities were minimal.
