hey guys,

i'm a private pilot who's looking into buying a 172/PA-28 for time building. i'm looking for someone who's either an owner/mechanic or simply knows his way around the mechanical condition of airplanes and can help me make sense of the online ads and screen them before i bother calling and testing out airplanes all over the country. just a little information is all i need.

in return, i'm offering my technical services - i have been a hi-tech entrepreneur, a software developer and security/networking expert for 6 years now and am glad to offer my technical assistance.

thanks!

What you will most likely want to do is find the a repair station near you, and ask some local pilots about the mechanics. If you find one that sounds good, introduce yourself. When you go to purchase your airplane you will want the mechanic to give it either a pre-buy inspection or an annual. I strongly recommend the latter, so that you know your aircraft is free of squawks. Any decent mechanic can tell you the inspection price for a common two or four seat aircraft.

You will likely conduct your search near your location, since what you are looking for is both common and short-term. To do otherwise is inadvisable. Unless you already have access to an aircraft, you'll be buying one within driving distance.

There are some good mechanics who frequent the board, but their advice is going to be less valuable than someone who has actually physically looked at your airplane.

Good luck.

Aviv I'm gonna make a recommendation here. I don't think a barter is going to work. I still recommend renting until you really know what it is you want to do and where you want to be however if you are intent on buying then contact a guy like Wayne on this board ( Wabower) I believe that Wayne is in the business of helping folks select and purchase aircraft.

That said I still think you should rent for a bit.
