Off-field landing near YYC

I was surprised by the cause alluded to in the article:

I've just lost the right fuel pump, that's why we're requesting 35 right

What I've read (and the fact that it ended up on a road) suggests there was a complete power loss. Does anyone know how that could happen in a Navajo? Except for crossfeed, I would have expected the fuel systems to be independent. Medicine Hat to Calgary seems like too short a flight for fuel exhaustion, and too far for contamination...
