Off-Airport Landing near KFNL gone wrong

Dood. Any time the injuries are minor, things didn't go all that wrong.

I was going to say the same thing...but this was a "deliberate" off-airport landing. (The context is confusing.)

“Apparently, the pilot was attempting to land the plane on an unpaved airstrip on his own property but decided at the last minute to make another approach,” Schulz says. “As he was trying to gain altitude to attempt another landing he hit some trees causing the plane to crash.”

True that. There's shades of wrong. The airplane in a big ball of twisted metal doesn't meet my definition of "right" but I never said I was unhappy he walked away!

Those pics are a far cry from what I would have expected, given your title of "off-airport landing" ... crap! That looks like leftovers from a tornado or CFIT at high speed and 90º crab angle!

There used to be a cartoon in our flight school (Jeff Macnelly if I remember right) that said "Any landing you can walk away from is a good one, and if the plane flies again it's excellent." The cartoon showed a plane crashed into a barn and the student asking how is landing was and the instructor looking around and saying "Middling."

something to be said for a steel tube fuselage. glad he is ok and sorry he screwed up. if just walking away was my standard for completion on off field landings (30ish and counting) I'd have a lot of problems

Wow- the cage protected him... just barely, but enough. They say he hit trees trying to go around; that would explain why it looks like it was hit with a giant hammer.
