Odd Printing Problem with PDF Files

A week ago, I reloaded the OS on this laptop. Of course, one of the things I loaded along with other applications is Acrobat Reader. Up until today, it seem to run fine with no issues.

Now, if I print any of the approach pages from this laptop, it asks if the printer is present then allows to click only an "OK" button and the printer proceeds with a blank page. It makes no difference if the IAP page is directly from the browser, the file downloaded to the desktop and printed or any difference whether it's from the NACO site or AOPA site.

It makes no difference whether the printer is a laser jet connected directly to the laptop, a color laser connected via the network or a ink jet via the network.

However, I can print any other pdf file I choose with no issue. That includes current pdfs for legal junk on the desktop to printing an AFH page from the FAA site. So far, it happens with ONLY the IAP pdf files.

I did completely un-install Acrobat Reader then reinstalled it. There was no change at all. I'm confused. :dunno:

Help!

Oh, and if you have an idea why the cordless mouse scroll wheel setting keeps going back to one line after restart as opposed to the three lines I set it at... :dunno:

Which version of the Reader?

Are you getting the PDFs from FAA or AOPA or where?
Acrobat Reader v8. This is the first time I had installed 8. All other machines have 7 and I resisted the upgrade until this new OS install.

I may go back to v7.09 if there's no solution soon enough.

Actually, both. I tried printing the IAPs from both sites. It mattered not if the files were downloaded to the computer and opened or printed from the browser.

As for a Mac... been there, done that. The mapping software for Atlanta is only available for the a PC. So, I'll stick with a standard for all my boxes.

I've printed successfully from 6 and 8. But you might try de-installing 8 and installing 7 and see what happens.

The number of lines the mouse wheel scrolls is an option in the mouse control panel properties, there's a tab for the wheel.

The approach plates are some of the most complicated pdf's I've seen. I'm not sure why they do it this way but things are printed in a seemingly random order. You may want to reduce the printer resolution and/or check your virtual memory size. That MIGHT have an effect.

That might be a clue, if the .pdf files are huge you might have to look at the PC-printer connection. Is the printer directly connected or do you print over the network?

In the old days my biggest concern for network traffic was postscript printing.

In the current set of approaches the smallest is 59KB (M57 - NDB OR GPS-B (LANDING)) and the largest is 1.2MB (JAC - RNAV (RNP) Z RWY 01). For the real techno-geeks mean = 248K std = 86K, n=10,790. For Lance, sorry no distribution histogram.

The largest ones seem to be the one with contour shading as a bitmap. I haven't figured out how to tell the most complicated (most pdf commands).

I change the mouse wheel in the control panel settings to a 5. Then, when I restart it goes back to 1. No clue why.

Regarding the PDF files... I have no clue what you mean by reducing the printer resolution. Are you talking about a printer setting? Ditto for virtual memory. I've played around a lot with XP but those are foreign to me.

To answer Mike as well, I get the same error and actions regardless of printer. It can be a laser direct by USB or it can be my big inkjet or color laser over the internet.

Ken,

Acrobat print dialog has an advanced button. On the advanced settings is probably (depends on the printer) a resolution selection. 300x300 will produce very high quality graphics. 150x150 would probably be adequate and a good test to see if it makes a difference.

And I was curious about the distribution of the sizes of the IAP PDFs. So here's the size histogram:

Joe, I'm not sure where you're looking at that screen. Is it supposed to be in the printer's propeties? Or? I've seen it but can't tell you where.

I've attached one of the IAP files I tried to print. It makes no difference what file it is though as far as IAPs. There's also a power of attorney guide I did print without issue.

I printed this file from the Konica site without issue.

However, on my other computer I have no problems at all printing from Acrobat v7. I'm actually in the middle of reinstalling the OS on it. I may attempt to load Acrobat v8 on it just to see if the problem continues.

Does anyone else have issues printing the IAPs with Acrobat v8 or am I it?
