I see only 3 obesity medications in the AOPA medication database. As far as you know, are the others OK with the FAA? Is it safe to fly if taking obesity medication? It is necessary talk to my AME before allowing my physician to prescribe any medication for obesity?

The following medications have been approved by the FDA for weight reduction:
phendimetrazine [Bontril, Melfiat, Prelu-2, etc.],
phentermine [Ionamin, Phentride, Fastin, Obe-Nex, Oby-Trim, Pro-Fast, Adipex-P, etc.],
diethylpropion [Tenuate],
mazindol [Mazanor, Sanorex],
benzphetamine [Didrex]
sibutramine [Meridia (FAA: not allowed)], and
orlistat [Xenical (FAA: one week without side effects)].

Dexatrim (FAA: 24 hour wait) has not been FDA approved.
