NTSB report on the GAI crash - icing

Ugh. Now that sucks.

Got an email earlier that the docket has been opened to the public.

What did you do to get that?

Signed up on the NTSB website. I believe its with the PR office. Tells you if a 'go team' has been sent, times for press briefings and upcoming public board meetings (which I occasionally attend).

There is an issue with the Phenom, a limitation of 150 knots for ice protection systems. This is because of the raised stall/pusher airspeed with ice protection on, that once caused a high altitude pusher activation due to an idiot playing with the switches.

Due to this limit, people tirn off the ice protection for landing, which if done too early can lead to significant ice accumulation.

Here in buffalo, we wait to the last second to turn the system off and keep airspeed high, which is not taught at CAE and can be the difference to landing with a clean aircraft, or landing as an ice ball.

I have brought this up during training, as have many others. But like many things, this AFM change will be written in blood.
