Custer Channel Wing

It may look odd, but NASA and Georgia Tech are taking a hard look at it again.

"Willard Custer made many claims for the Channelwing, including discovery of new lift principles which he called "aerophysics." Engineers, cynics and parents know that you can't get something for nothing, so when Custer claimed 8.2 pounds of static lift per horsepower by a very simple, fixed wing aircraft, critics scoffed. Ultimately, Custer's persistence gave him provable 13.8 pounds of lift per horsepower, vertical takeoff capability, high speed, simple construction, and load capacity beyond anything built up to that time."

One of Custer's demos included a tethered flight where the aircraft would lift off and pull the rope taut while "suspended" in mid-air.

I've offered to be the test pilot if the Mid-Atlantic Air Museum ever restored theirs to airworthy condition. ;)
