Felix Rosenqvist at Saturday's Detroit Indycar race:

He was taken to a local hospital for observation and some imaging. He left the following morning with no significant injuries.

Hughes 500 has a round steel cage. Everything breaks off and the pax compartment rolls. Actually happened to a friend of mine. Unfortunately, he hit a wire while hot-dogging it up a river valley. All survived, but he was not insured. Never flew again.

Most spectacular crash I've seen recently was the 2020 Bahrain F1 race. Lap 1, a car gets clipped on the back corner and goes straight into a steel barrier. The front of the car, with the driver's cage, went through the barrier, and the back end broke off and stayed on the track side.

The video, at about the 1:15 mark, shows the driver escaping.

edit: looks like I can't embed this video here.

Here's what went through the barrier, that halo saved his life:

Yeah, that was a near thing, his hands nearly got toasted.

Thank goodness for soft walls.

For some reason the engine was up on the rev limiter, stuck throttle.??

The team said it was caused by a "mechanical issue" that wasn't related to the engine or its engine management system. They also said it has been corrected and won't happen again. In other words, they did something wrong and aren't going to tell us what.

If you're going to crash, Michigan International is the place to do it. It's got the best on-track medical system of any place in the country. Not as much of a problem in some series that have good travelling medical guys, but boy in NASCAR, it makes a hell of a difference. Ask Ernie Irvin.

I do believe that he did that on Belle Isle (part of the city of Detroit). But not far from the downtown hospitals.
