New version of Nigerian scam. Haven't seen this one before. From Port Columbus Intl Airport <[email protected]> Interesting that the KCMH "inspection agent" is using googlemail.com, and the executive director is using gmail. The English is fun, too.

Urgent Reply, Attention: Consignment Owner,
Attention:

I am Daren Griffin, Executive Director, Port Columbus
International Airport Ohio USA, During our recent withheld package
routine check at the Airport Storage Vault, we had discovered an
abandoned shipment from one Diplomat agent who came all the way from
Republic of Nigeria under shipping forwarder from Murtala Muhammed
International Airport (MMIA) to our facility custody here in Port
Columbus Ohio

The consignment was abandoned because the Contents of the consignment
was not properly declared by the consignee as “ATM MASTER CARD” rather it was
declared as personal effect to avoid diversion by the Shipping Agent
and also the inability of the diplomat to pay for the United States
Non Inspection Charges, On my assumption, the box contain
an ATM-card and some Certificate on it and the consignment is still in
our Storage House here in Port Columbus Intl Airport till today.

However; you should be informed that the Consignment in one metal
boxes with weight of about 8.3kg (Internal dimension: W61 x H156 x D73
(cm). Effective capacity: 180

L.) Approximately, the details of the consignment including your
name/address were tagged on the Metal consignment boxes. Please note
that this consignment is supposed to returned to the United States
Treasury Department as unclaimed delivery due to your delays in
contacting us with (Sworn Affidavit for claim / Custom Delivery permit
Order) from the origin of the Country Nigeria because it is where the
Consignment originated from

Our Inspection Agent Mrs Thelma Davis was sent to Republic of
Nigeria in Africa previously to tackle this problem to enable the beneficiaries
to obtain the Sworn Affidavit for claim / Custom Delivery permit Order
from Custom and Border Protection Nigeria to enable the beneficiaries
to receive their fund.

Direct Line ( +2348063033117, email: [email protected])

Be informed that Mrs Thelma Davis do not have much time to stay
in Nigeria so she would like you to urgently respond to this message
so that she can advise you on how best to obtain these documents within
the next 24 hours.

I am waiting for your prompt respond as soon as you have made contact with
our Agent Mrs Thelma Davis

Yours faithfully

Daren Griffin,

A quick Google search pokes a few holes in that short story.

I sometimes wonder if scams this bad are setup intentionally to just harvest contact info for people who reply to them. It would make for a list of people that will respond to basically anything, which might improve the productivity of actual scams. I say that because some of the newer scams can be a little complicated to get past MFA.

Scams (not phishing) are often deliberately written poorly or “obviously” to select out the most gullible/least scrutinizing people. From their perspective, it’s just a way of maximizing hit rate. If you’re so gullible as to reply to what to the vast majority of people is obviously a scam email or phone call, you’re much more likely to go through with giving the scammers what they want. Why waste time making a semi believable or enticing story only to lose the mark once you start talking about having them send you money or gift cards or whatever? It’s also why scammers tend to target the elderly. The elderly disproportionately don’t know how to screen out things in the modern era

Phishing is obviously a completely different game.

Whew, they had me. Right up to the word "urgent". No one(except scammers and fedex) has used the word 'urgent' in any communication since the 60s.

Except at my company, apparently. Usually followed in the subject line by “action required.” All caps.

Sounds like you either work for the phone company or the government. It was maybe 20 years ago that a fellow from nynex pointed out that they're effectively the same thing...both do whatever they want, and just ignore logic, rules, or consequences.

I must have some really good filtering software on my tablet ...

I never get phishing messages ... Or spam ...
