Isn't eyesight one of the prerequisits for flying a plane? How does one miss something like that?

It was an ultralight, no verification of visual acuity required. (no medical?)

And it is Aussie, but how do you miss a ferris wheel? :goofy:

Even though the article says they had just departed a nearby airfield, they'd be flying awfully low to hit the top of a small transportable (truckable) ferris wheel. Kudos for the way they had it secured to the ground (it didn't topple over!). LSA = low kinetic energy and the framework of the ferris wheel was probably a great way to "crumple zone" dispense with that energy. They got lucky. A beam in the wrong place, serious owwies.

Perhaps not entirely the pilots fault?
Were NOTAMs (or the Australian equivelent) issued for the ferris wheel?

Air safety investigators are examining why the ferris wheel was set up so close to the end of the runway.
Mr Cox said yesterday he didn't see the ferris wheel.s
"I just want to take off, do a go-around and I didn't even see the ferris wheel," he said.

The plane, a Cheetah S200, was practicing touch-and-go manoeuvres at a nearby airstrip, but failed to gain enough altitude to clear the ferris wheel, which was placed at the southern end of the runway as part of the local Old Bar Beach Festival.
