With all that R-airspace in the vicinity why do they do this just outside the SUA? OTOH, with all that R-airspace in the vicinity any non-participating aircraft would be SOL caught betwixt and between.

CONDUCTED AT APCHE POINT OBSERVATORY

Observatories are usually substantially stuck in the ground. Real hard to move.

FL600+ = assorted atmosphere or ranging research or such most likely. Probably pretty much straight up or tracking targets (moon, planets, etc) near zenith.

At least it's science to learn something and not political touchy feely whiny nonsense. Just 6 hours. Fly around.
