Wow, how do you prevent a head over heals like that?

Hard to with fixed gear, your best bet is to stall the a/c a couple feet above the water using full aft elevator and try to go tail-first.
 
Glad to hear everyone got out. I see that plane all the time down the ramp from my flight school...was a beautiful bird.

That has to be back breaking though. I've barked the props on offshore boats before and those landings hurt.

It has to be better than getting your head and face thrown into the panel from tumbling, like the majority of fixed gear water landings. Bleeding off as much energy as practical and doing so just above the water tail first, allows for the softest possible water landing in the event of an emergency. Choosing water over trees? Thats another topic for a thread.
