Yes, I am starting another monkey thread. Whilst the monkey is one's possession, that possessor can post monkey threads ad-nauseam. Ignore button is up there to the right.

At any rate...

Waiting for a meeting to start that is missing a lot of people and getting to a way late start.

Me: Hey, want to hear a crazy story?
Bill From Finance: Yes
Me: See this envelope? Inside is a monkey
Bill From Finance: Ok
Me: Yatta Yatta 2034 miles blah blah blah 1/2 way

Bill: But if he wants it, you could just mail it

Me: not the point

Bill: I mean I wouldn't drive 500 miles to hand a toy monkey to someone that was going to drive 500 miles to etc, etc. It would be so inefficient

Me: not the point Bill

Bill: I could see maybe if it was a real live monkey. Then you gotta be careful. You don't want someone just throwing a living monkey into a mail box or something

Me: I think we see the world differently Bill

Bill: Did you know a real monkey will kill you. You don't want a real monkey as a pet. Some people do it. They will rip your face right off.

Me: Bill, I think maybe you are not understanding

Bill: Did you know they throw their own poop? Who wants to be on the receiving end of that anyway? I mean they rip your face off and then throw that at you?

Me: hmmm So bill, did you run the ROI on the PRISM project... SMH

I think you should hand the monkey off to me... and get him out of your hands!

It looks like crap weather this weekend and Unit74 is grounded so that may be a good idea. Can you get east?

Maybe. A lot depends on the weather and our photo schedule. I think I'm booked Mon, Tues, Thurs, and Sat of next week so far. Do we have anyone over in Longview?

I might have another dog flight to the panhandle next week. We could always ship Monkey back to the Denver..

If no movement this weekend, we can consider options for the 19-20th

After what the monkey did at 6PCs house, there's warrants out for him here. I wouldn't bring him this direction. Hahaha.

For what it's worth, pilots look at me like I'm an idiot too.

I have been extremely selective on who I tell the monkey story to, knowing some people just won't get it and it would be more trouble than it's worth.

I told a non-pilot about it and he understood and thought it was cool and funny.

David

I also tell the monkey story pretty often. I must have cool acquaintances, or polite ones, because they also think it is pretty neat, although just a little bit of an odd thing to do. They do have questions about the process, and surprisingly I get asked on occasion where the monkey is. Most however understand most pilots that do it for fun will use any excuse to get in the air. The unique and funny things you all do in relation to the monkey story makes it an easy and entertaining story to tell! Because of this little saga I get to talk about flying with people I normally don't. From where I sit this is one entertaining trek.

Let me guess, Bill is an engineer or MBA. Engineers and MBAs can't understand the concepts of making an excuse to do something that costs, be it time/energy or money. If something happens, there should be a valid reason for it and done the best way possible.

Or Bill knows about Bryan and his "eccentricities" and decided to mess with him.

I'll still be in OKC but I'm land bound whilst the cowl is off. I can ground roll it back to LIT then air freight it east if someone gets it to OUN.

Hey! I'm an engineer and still am enjoying this whole thing (vicariously)!

OK, I guess technically I'm a scientist since my degree is in Computer Science. But my cards have said SW Engineer for years...

The MBA thing I'll buy. Maybe...

I have one question for you John, "Are you flying the monkey?" Nuff said...

Bill just has to do an ROI on every dump he takes to determine if it is worth it.

well, now you know who got the coffee cup

Well, he's not exactly in 172 range of Orlando at the moment. (Day trips only.) So I plead geographical unsuitability.

John

Where is the monkey and where does he want to go?

Is somebody crunching the numbers? As in, "The $17,629 monkey?" Such a figure would help non-pilots understand better.

And is a way better story than a hamburger.

Denton Tx not near. Plus 500 mile limit excludes me mostly...

I was thinking to put that stat together at the end. And remember, you can pretty much double the mileage shown in the monkey's flight log to get what it actually took to transport the monkey.

We actually joked about this at dinner last night with a bunch of pilots after I told them the monkey story. Generally we saw it as a not-so-good idea. Telling folks flying is expensive (and they already know that) and pilots will pay that much to fly a figurine around the county, isn't going to win many converts.

Telling them you did it to enjoy seeing the country from the sky and sharing THOSE photos and memories, still strikes a spark in the minds of those who want to fly.

I didn't care if I was carrying a monkey or "rubber dog **** out of Hong Kong"... I just saw a chance to fly my airplane over some of the most beautiful terrain in the U.S., take my airplane over the Rockies in winter (often not possible, a nice weather window), meet Sam, and his family, drop off a bottle of he most horrible alcohol known to man to see if it ever made it back to Sac, and mess around losing some bucks at a Craps table in Vegas for the weekend. (I ended up down $100. Big spender. Played for hours.)

And to make fun of it all with friends on a pilot forum.

Making it about the monkey or the total cost of transporting the money, without the stories of the people and airplanes kinda kills it for non-flyers. They live in the world of Amazon dropping whatever they desire on their doorstep in two days or faster for $30.

Gotta tell the story of flying. Not the price tag. People who want to fly will rationalize away the price tag. We always have.

So very, very true. Good observations. I casually figured out that it costs us about $377 (hangar, fuel, insurance, etc. etc.) for every hour my husband flies. There really is no justification except the experience.
