After a one-year hiatus of the Red Bull Air Race World Championships, officials say the much-anticipated event won’t be held in 2012 either.

The tragic accident at the Reno Air Races earlier this year has triggered speculation among many Red Bull Air Race fans about whether or not either event will ever return. But because the Red Bull and Reno races are so different, with completely different setups, there is no reason to believe what occurs at one event would have any bearing on the other.

I'm glad we saw them when we did.

Same goes for Reno. What a shame.

They actually came to NY last year, and I wound up not going. Not sure what I was thinking. Even if the races continued, the chance of seeing them again in NY would be slim.

I don't like Red Bull anyway. Nasty stuff. I drink Monster. Also nasty, but I seem to have developed a taste.

It's all about the money. Red Bull is pulling out of NASCAR for 2012, too (Kasey Kahne is moving from the #4 Red Bull car to the #5 Hendrick/Go Daddy car and will be keeping that seat warm for Danica in 2013).

In any event, I guess too many folks agree with steingar.

Are their sales/revenue/net earnings down? What are the kids drinking now? Hair tonic?

If I have this right, Red Bull invented energy drinks, and had the market to themselves for a long enough period of time to make oodles of cash. For example, I saw them years before I saw anybody else save Jolt Cola. Now there are lots of competitors, many of who sell their drinks at a substantial discount (Red Bull is actually quite pricey). Since the drinks are all equally vile, I imagine the lead with which Red Bull started has begun to wane along with its profit margin, thus leading to a reduction in the firm's extra curricular activities.

I was in NY at the time as well.

When I was around ICAS people more often I had heard that they were not making money on the air stuff and several race planes had already been sold. Seemed to indicate it was over.....

They sure do have a nice collection of planes in Austria:

That's Lefty Gardner's P-38 without the white paint.....
