Mayor Dick Daley has left the office effective today.

Chicago has a new mayor and many of you know of him. Mayor Rahm Emmanual starts today.

Meigs is dead and Mayor Rahm has no plans to rebuilt it that anyone outside of his inner circle know of. I doubt that even in his inner circle the issue has ever been discussed.

At least it too late for Dick to sink Northerly Island.

If Rahm wanted to float the idea of rebuilding Meigs it would be the usual outrage version now, "The city is BROKE and they want to spend taxpayer money for a buncha rich pilots?" Ok....Next on the agenda, new slips at the harbors and the expansion of the golf courses....

What has been done with Northerly Island since Meigs was closed?

Yeah, but if the park district sells the land to the city using 90% FAA money, the city will still be MUCH better off than they are now.

Chicago will never see the like of him again. What a Dick.....

A pavilion for concerts was built on it and some walking paths were created. Hardly anyone goes there because it is so far away from where anyone lives.
A colleague of mine who lives in Chicago told me today that she thought it was used pretty frequently. I haven't been there to see for myself.

Don't try to bring logic and facts to an issue when emotion will do :p

Don't doubt Dick would try to derail any effort to make it an airport again either. I'll wager he knows more than a few people's skeletons to prevent it from happening. Making it an airport again would be easier if he had passed away rather than "retired".

The sad thing is pilots let themselves be pigeon-holed as "rich" in the first place. Don't get me wrong, most I know aren't poor. Still, the "rich" pilots typically fly turboprops or turbines, not pistons. Pilots also, typically, don't have the time (or in some cases inclination) for outreach in the community.

Meigs isn't coming back. Pity, I suspect it was an economic generator for the city. Daley's excuse for destroying it was particularly ironic. Security? What's more secure than a couple more pairs of eyes on the lake?

Now that arriving and departing traffic is no longer an issue in that area, do ya s'pose that that airspace could be used for a nice, low altitude hold for the turbines arriving O'Hare or Midway?
