Im about to close on a Mooney M20J with a G430w and a King KMA24 audio panel. It definitely has no back seat intercom, but does not appear to have pilot to copilot intercom. If I'm going to spend the money to have intercom added, is it time to just go ahead and upgrade the audio panel also?

That's what I would do. My 1981 T-210 had a -24 installed when it was brand-new, and that was 33 years ago. PS Engineering has a plug and play model that fits the -24 rack, but the shop says you have to install or rewire the intercom system separately.

It is hard for me to believe that a Mooney new enough to be an M20J, could have been built without an intercom.

I am, of course, prepared to be surprised.

If it works out that it well and truly has no intercom, of course, installing one is pretty important - a safety issue, in my view. While there are excellent stand-alone intercoms, if I were investing the labor required for an all-new intercom install, I'd probably go ahead and drop the extra coin for a PS Engineering audio panel, a PMA8000B, or BT (with BlueTooth connectivity).

I had a KMA24 audio panel and put in a PS Engineering 1000-II intercom. At the time PS Engineering hadn't finished their integrated audio panel/intercom which would have been my best choice. Subsequently i put the Garmin audio panel/intercom, which unfortunately was a mistake. It's a peice of crapola and Garmin's service policies are abhorrent.

It is not uncommon to find Mooneys without an integrated intercom. Mine had a Sigtronics standalone unit in addition to the KMA20.

Take a look at this slide in replacement for the KMA24. Most likely you will need to have the additional wiring done to get it to be a 4 place intercom. But, should be a bit cheaper than rewiring the audio panel.
