No Chevy, No Levee; Just Fine

A long, long time ago
In a galaxy far away
Naboo was under an attack
And I thought me and Qui-Gon Jinn
Could talk the federation into
Maybe cutting them a little slack

But their response, it didn't thrill us
They locked the doors and tried to kill us
We escaped from that gas
Then met Jar Jar and Boss Nass

We took a bongo from the scene
And we went to Theed to see the Queen
We all wound up on Tatooine
That's where we found this boy...

Oh my my this here Anakin guy
May be Vader someday later - now he's just a small fry
And he left his home and kissed his mommy goodbye
Sayin' "Soon I'm gonna be a Jedi"
"Soon I'm gonna be a Jedi"

Did you know this junkyard slave
Isn't even old enough to shave
But he can use the Force, they say
Ah, do you see him hitting on the queen
Though he's just nine and she's fourteen
Yeah, he's probably gonna marry her someday

Well, I know he built C-3PO
And I've heard how fast his pod can go
And we were broke, it's true
So we made a wager or two
He was a prepubescent flyin' ace
And the minute Jabba started off that race
Well, I knew who would win first place
Oh yes, it was our boy

We started singin' ...
My my this here Anakin guy
May be Vader someday later - now he's just a small fry
And he left his home and kissed his mommy goodbye
Sayin' "Soon I'm gonna be a Jedi"
"Soon I'm gonna be a Jedi"

Now we finally got to Coruscant
The Jedi Council we knew would want
To see how good the boy could be
So we took him there and we told the tale
How his midi-chlorians were off the scale
And he might fulfill that prophecy

Oh, the Council was impressed, of course
Could he bring balance to the Force?
They interviewed the kid
Oh, training they forbid

Because Yoda sensed in him much fear
And Qui-Gon said "Now listen here"
"Just stick it in your pointy ear"
"I still will teach this boy"

He was singin' ...
My my this here Anakin guy
May be Vader someday later - now he's just a small fry
And he left his home and kissed his mommy goodbye
Sayin' "Soon I'm gonna be a Jedi"
"Soon I'm gonna be a Jedi"

We caught a ride back to Naboo
'Cause Queen Amidala wanted to
I frankly would've liked to stay

We all fought in that epic war
And it wasn't long at all before
Little Hotshot flew his plane and saved the day

And in the end some Gunguns died
Some ships blew up and some pilots fried
A lot of folks were croakin'
The battle droids were broken

And the Jedi I admire most
Met up with Darth Maul and now he's toast
Well, I'm still here and he's a ghost
I guess I'll train this boy

And I was singin' ...
My my this here Anakin guy
May be Vader someday later - now he's just a small fry
And he left his home and kissed his mommy goodbye
Sayin' "Soon I'm gonna be a Jedi"
"Soon I'm gonna be a Jedi"

 What don't you understand about the accident that brought us Pt 135?

I get the Buddy Holly part. What about the second verse:

Now for ten years we've been on our own
And moss grows fat on a rollin' stone
But that's not how it used to be
When the jester sang for the king and queen
In a coat he borrowed from James Dean
And a voice that came from you and me

Oh, and while the king was looking down
The jester stole his thorny crown
The courtroom was adjourned
No verdict was returned

And while Lenin read a book on Marx
A quartet practiced in the park
And we sang dirges in the dark
The day the music died

Or the third:

Helter skelter in a summer swelter
The birds flew off with a fallout shelter
Eight miles high and falling fast
It landed foul on the grass
The players tried for a forward pass
With the jester on the sidelines in a cast

Now the halftime air was sweet perfume
While the sergeants played a marching tune
We all got up to dance
Oh, but we never got the chance

'Cause the players tried to take the field
The marching band refused to yield
Do you recall what was revealed
The day the music died?

???????????????

The song was written 10 years after the plane crash, released 12 years after. He is talking about life going on after Buddy died.

His adopted town, Camden, is a great little town. David Crosby(C S &N) also lives there. Efrem Zimbalist, Junior's family goes way back to when his violinist father had an estate there. There are other celebrities in the arts who keep a low profile and are, in so many words, "left alone." i Have a series of aerial shots in my files but at the moment I'm messing with the laptop and they're not inside this thing. According to my Weather Bug it's 2°f(at Wiscasset Airport which is about 4 "crow flies" miles from here) and I'm working from upstairs which is warmer than the large basement where the PC is located.
(Should have put an improved weather seal on the main entrance door back during the summer)

The change in music in the 60s and the civil discourse, the last refers to loss of innocence and the realization of death.

Did David bring Mayan to Camden? That is a sweet boat, I remember when Jackson Browne was living on it in the slip next door in Sausalito. That was a fun summer.

Some would say those are just an amalgamation of music references. Dylan-the jester, The Beatles- Quartet in the Park, The Byrds- 8 miles high, Joplin, etc. No deeper meaning implied.

I didn't include it, but in the forth verse the father, son, and holy ghost some speculate as JFK, RFK, MLK others say it is just another reference to Holly, Valens, Big Bopper, still others say it is a direct religious reference.

My personal theory: McLean started writing a song about the Buddy Holly crash. While writing it he got completely baked and went off on a number of tangents. Somehow through the cloud of smoke a hit song appeared. He can't really explain it given the circumstances, so he doesn't. Not a lot of success followed, so I consider that further evidence.

I know very little about him except that he lives in Camden and maintains a low profile. A relative of mine has a motel and an inn in town and has said that Crosby can be seen, occasionally, dining in the restaurant at one of them. Camden is known as a gathering harbor for some fine vessels. Probably the grandest of all was many decades ago, that being the magnificent motor yacht of Cyrus H. K. Curtis, Curtis Publishing Company(Saturday Evening Post and dozens of other magazines). His dollars were very generously bestowed upon the town, during and after his worldly presence.

When did he move to Camden?

When I was going to school at MMA 15 years ago, his house was in Castine (Other side of Penobscot Bay)......I used to walk by it frequently. TOTAL recluse.....in fact, unless he opened up in the last 10 years, the only reason this was likely news is because he made an appearance in public!

Not sure it was Part 135 that the Holly/Valens/Richardson crash spawned. It certainly did lead to the requirement that commercial pilots have instrument ratings for other than trivial flights.

I agree with Alex. I think McLean threw some basic references to events, people, songs into his lyrics without really trying to make a definite anthology. His public statements over the years other than the fact that it is a dedication to Buddy Holly, is to neither confirm nor deny any statements as to what the song is about. He specifically states that certain "experts" (like Casey Kasem) did not have any special information from him.

Exactly, it's a simple song about death. If you want a complex song easy to decode go listen to Woodstock.

Interesting that we can't just enjoy the song :) DJ's love it cause they can take an unscheduled potty break. ;)

That scenerio followed ALOT of artists in that time frame..;)...

Becoming "completely baked" was a great american past time ya know..:yesnod:

In this day and age yes. Back when we used to spin 45's that song was a pain in the butt because it was too long to fit on one side of a 45. Of course, if you had the album copy it was a lot easier.
