Anyone know off the top of their head if there's a distro available for a linux live cd that already has chntpw on it?

My old knoppix 2 that I last used to rescue an old windoze box doesn't have it, and Win 10 rescue is going to need chntpw.

I built a latest knoppix 7.2.0 but when trying to add chntpw (1.0-1), I got stuck in the endless loop of conflicting dependent package requirements.

I did see a reference to a Unbuntu bistro that appears to show adding the pkg successfully.

I know nothing of Linux but ya might wanna have that chntpw looked at by a doctor. It sounds nasty.

Just verified - WSL seems to be able to 'apt-get install' chntpw and run it fine so I assume any Ubuntu distro will work for you.

WSL (the Windows 10 CU edition) is based on Ubuntu 14.04.5 LTS (i.e. trusty).

[EDIT] By run fine I mean against a SAM file from a different Windows install. You can't run it on the active Windows install from within WSL, for obvious reasons.

Thanks - will give that a try tomorrow (the box is sitting in my other office).

Dang it! You got em to use Google today. I almost made it through the day without it.

Great idea for a new, exclusive hangout - "The Unbuntu Bistro"!

There are ISOs floating around that are specifically built around chntpw as single-purpose bootable systems. I used to have one on CD, but I can't find it or the ISO or else I'd burn or mail you a copy. They're pretty tiny. But there's a more recent version here or here anyway. If all you need is the locksmith, that will work just fine and is faster to boot (quite literally).

I'm also pretty sure that you can "install" chntpw to any Debian-based live system while it's running using apt-get or the package manager of your choice. I don't know about any of the other distros, but I can't think of a reason why you wouldn't be able to. There is an RPM available for RedHat-like systems.

Thanks, Rich. Either of those look like a good option as well - yep, the locksmith is all I need on this particular box. Attrition, layoffs, mergers and acquisitions playing hell with the infrastructure around here lately.

downloaded the chntpw bootable iso and worked like a champ ... easy peasy - no muss no fuss. no apt-get and no package dependency issues.
Thanks, Rich.
