Good morning, I recently bought a project. The vertical and horizontals are close to finished. I wanted to try my hand at scratch building. What is a good source for aluminum? I though I would buy spars and difficult pieces from the factory but hoping to build some parts also.

Aircraft Spruce and Wicks are probably the two best known sources. May be others locally, depending on where you are. Suggest you check with builders in the closest EAA Chapter also.

Need to check what alloy of aluminum (2024 and 6061 most likely) the plans call for and match thickness.

I'd suggest buying the fuel tanks, too. The welding of them is critical, and about the only welding required.

Probably going to start with 6061 T6 .025. I live near KC Mo. would love to do a local pickup. Just thought someone might know of a god source that can be trusted.

I wonder if the factory at Mexico Mo would sell raw materials? For rivets and clecos they seemed as inexpensive/expensive as Wicks or Spruce.

the zenith factory does sell the raw materials at reasonable prices.
