That is one great photo.

If you are in the path, PLEASE do the safe thing and get out of the way.

We had the remnants of a hurricane rip through here. Were I in the path of one of those things, I'd run far, far away. Gorgeous shot though, thanks for the post.

All sorts of fakes on the Net today... lots of screenshots from that NY disaster movie that came out a while back.

Looks fake to me... it's been solid low overcast since last night, and the eye is nowhere near that close.

Currently, KEWR ATIS (2 miles from me) says 040/36, gusting 47. vis 2 1/2, few 900, 1700 broken; overcast 3000. Temp/dew 16/24; altimeter 28.75. The rain is still pretty light. Tower freq's been very quiet today, although I did hear a heavy departing this morning.

Looks like the worst will come late tonight, when the eye makes landfall south of here. We're ready... although I may run up the street to get more beer before it gets much worse. :D

Regardless of the picture, this is a monster storm. The latest central pressure is being reported as 940 mb and still dropping. I'm not sure if that's an actual reading or an estimate, but it's scary to think about a storm that strong that far north and in the process already (at least I think so) of becoming extra-tropical.

Altimeter setting at KACY is already 28.36, with the comment PRESFR.

I'm sure you mean that far north on the east coast. The northwestern Pacific and the Gulf of Alaska and Bering Sea area sees several storms of this intensity, and worse, every year. Winds of hurricane speed, > 74mph, are a regular feature on the Oregon and Washington coasts as well.

The winds yes, but is it common for the pressure to get that low? I was under the impression that extratropical storms below 950 mb were very rare.

EDIT: altimeter at KACY now 28.27, still PRESFR.

The worst I remember reading about in the Bering Sea was in 1977, 926mb, 130 knot winds in Dutch Harbor and seas reported at 72 feet. I have personally seen readings in the 950s and 960s. The Aleutians record an average of 70 days a year with winds in excess of hurricane force.

That being said, I do not for a second want to minimize the tremendous impact that Sandy will have on one of the largest population centers of our nation. This will be ugly.

It's as much how far the outer bands go out as it is central pressure. Something like 500 miles from center. There's a couple of photos (I think on Buzzfeed) that compare this storm to Irene.

Newark NJ ????? You REALLY live in Newark ????? That's like our nation's armpit ! I was based in Newark, I know.

Been here about 15 years... it's all about proximity to NYC, cheap loft space and free parking. It's just another city to me, and not too bad, once you learn where to look. :wink2:

Altimeter is 28.51 now, and the wind is officially howling around the building...gusting in the 40s for long periods. There were stacks of heavy foam insulating boards on the roof of the building being built next door... most of it has taken flight. Not much rain, though, which is a blessing.

Some pretty good pictures here.

I DO NOT mean to be snarky, at all but if you live in LOWER Manhattan, it will flood sometimes.
It's like living in Florida, or New Orleans. I live in Florida. Sometimes we get hurricanes. We deal with it.
If YOU Choose to live below sea level, you will get flooded.
Period.
If you live in tornado alley, you will see tornadoes.
If you choose to live in Arizona it will get hot.
If you choose to live in Alaska, it will get cold and snow.

If you choose to live in Nebraska you will see all of the above, and have a winning football team. :happydance:

Hey, we have a winning team here in Atlanta. The kind that gets paid legally to play. ;)

Oh man, can you imagine when the storm passes over long island and the wind empties out NY Harbour the current that is going to run through Hell's Gate with the water stacked in the sound. I'd love to run that in the 62' Predator, that was a handling machine.

Power finally restored to the 'hood about an hour ago... while I was out driving around looking for someplace to get gas and batteries, LOL.
Could go out again, though... but at least the wind is steadily abating, and no more rain at the moment. KEWR still closed...

We're still dead in the water here on my job. Everything is shut down until further notice. We lost all six 13kv feeders last night! Three from PSE&G and three from Con-Ed.

We're still on emergency generators for the time being. The flooding around here was crazy! All of the substations and high tension switchgear flooded:yikes:

This is the first time I've experienced a total blackout like this, in all my years as a controller! A few summers ago, we only lost the three from Con-Ed during the big blackout of the east coast. Sandy wiped us out completely:lol:.

It was weird how they started failing all at the same time! It started as brownouts and partial systems failures then rapidly dropped! You could tell the equipment was failing due to water damage! This all happened just as I was briefing my relief around 2000. I was just about to get a ride up to the hotel they put us in, as all hell broke loose!

I hung around for another two hours to help sort things out, didn't wanna leave my poor co-worker stranded all alone:nono::rofl:

We just got diverted.....again.

Bummer... I live half a block from a PSEG substation; never saw any problem there during the storm or any vehicles going in/out. This area will flood badly when there's enough rain, but fortunately it was mostly strong wind; very light rain, considering. I'm guessing the blackout was pre-emptive, for repair work... didn't see any lines down around here, but there may be significant damage elsewhere in the area. Heard on the radio today that NJT got trashed, system-wide...it'll be a while before they're running again. PATH system is apparently stopped too- no surprise, as they tend to have trouble whenever it rains.

I've missed a little work so far, but no big deal... I will be busy enough soon, resetting systems and re-aligning dishes, on top of the installs that are on hold this week. I'm enjoying the break.
Best news is that yesterday's parking ticket court date was cancelled, and I'm pretty sure I won't have to go to the other courthouse tomorrow for jury selection! :D

Wow! I'm on jury standby too. Today was my second day calling but so far, not selected.

Yes Con-Ed contacted me early yesterday and had me unload one feeder and I was told to standby until further notice with the rest. Don't know why they waited til things started going south:dunno: But that's their call, we're just a client.

After the blackout, some of our guys here told me they saw huge flashes near our buildings in the Newport area! I guess some PSE&G transformers blew! They said it lit up the sky:lol:
