A year ago I bought a chart from Sporty's labeled JNCA-5 and advertised as being ideal for preliminary VFR planning. It is large - 58 x 41 inches and shows the entire U.S. and a good portion of southern Canada. Technically a jet chart, it was good for laying out on the floor and pondering routing options. One big problem: the information on it was from Sept. 1997!

Well it looks like the FAA is finally planning to release a proper VFR planning wall chart of similar size (59x36) and will allegedly be updated yearly. Here are a couple links with more information:

FAA web page to order a copy (though it is 3 months away - I'm sure they'll take your money now - this is the government after all!):

This is the JNCA-5 product I bought that is so old that continental drift and politics have made it invalid:

Nice! I've got the JNCA-5 on foamboard and covered with a plastic film so I can use a china marker on it, but as you note it's WAAAAY out of date.

The JNCA-5 is no longer available. That is probably best as it was outdated. I went ahead and ordered two of the new FAA VFR wall planning chart that comes out in February. One for office and one for home. I can't wait to get them. I have been looking for one since I got my license a little over a year ago. 365 cross-country hours later it is needed even more.
