New Technology for Small Airports

Sounds great we just need people both flying and on the ground to use the radio.the device won't prevent accidents it will just record them.

It sounds like liveatc.net to me and not a bad idea either. Of course, it would be cheaper to do a liveatc than let the gov"t do the work.

The actual device may be slightly smaller.

I can only imagine how many conversations they'll record about old guys' fishing trips and golf outings.

A better invention would be to combine this device with a recording TAS box so that it would record communications and position. With this thing as it is, In any case, I'm not sure what they hope to learn. Pilots make mistakes and airplanes have huge blind spots? Wow! Earth shattering.

The self-serve salad bar of airport funding at work

This is good tech. I wonder how much to set it up?
**** After I posted the Link I noticed that AOPA has also written about it and gave more information about cost of set-up. I don't have the AOPA Link handy.

Plane collides with truck on runway for the first and only time in the entire history of the airport and someone comes up with the idea that we need to record all radio transmissions henceforth in perpetuity.

When is this type of nonsense going to come to an end? :mad2:

What about the man without a radio.
I myself use no radio but I do have a TAS installed. Not sure it would help with a truck though. I have a handheld and gets used when flying with others. But in the pattern I do not use one. I flew with one for a year and heard nothing over it, local anyway.
But then again I fly a 38 hp high drag low speed airplane.

Replied on another post.

Misnomer in the headline. The recording will not increase safety, only provide more information for accident nvestigation. And provide fuel for the radio nazi.

People don't make radio calls all the time. I've had days that the pattern was so busy and the radio chatter so intense that I entered the pattern and landed without one radio call.

I don't see how archiving CTAF chatter will really help analyze accidents (with the intent of preventing future mishaps).
Like most of us, I have seen a number of accidents and incidents that were not described in any way on the radio. And in the case of the Owls Head accident, what would be learned? That either the truck or the airplane did not announce their presence on the runway? Does that really matter? Was one or the other operating without lights, and if they were, did they announce this on the radio?
It's a silly knee-jerk reaction, IMHO... a waste of money.

I think a video camera would make a whole lot more sense, if the aim is to improve safety. Personally, I wouldn't mind that, because with just about everybody these days walking around with a hi-def video recorder in their pocket I just assume that everything I do outside my home is potential YouTube fodder anyway. Look around before you scratch your butt, pick your nose, or make a sloppy landing! :D
