Got the new GPS "installed" today. No tools needed. It pretty much just slides in and the friction of the cutout keeps it in place. Also got the SL40 installed and the copilot side PTT as well. GPS replaces all the charts and plates needed. Also has synthetic vision, obstacle and terrain avoidance, and altitude stepdown alerts when flying approaches. Weather and collision avoidance if I want to add it on. One thing I would like to find is a mini keyboard that connects via usb about the size of a smartphone to access menus quicker on the device. One that could mount to the wheel would rock.

Very cool!
Not that I pretend to have a vast knowledge base of these things, but I have never heard of this before. How new is it? I saw on the web that it can be purchased for less than $3,000. Did you install it or did you have it installed? Is it experimental or is it STC'd for GA?

I got mine for under $2k from TrueFlight (as a return customer) including software. Yeah, it's more expensive than a tablet, but it fits in my panel, which is what I was looking for. There is no stc, as it is still portable and it's not installed. The MFD cutout was the exact size I needed it to be, as it snugly fits inside there. No screws, no bolts, no trays, nothing. I had two cigarette adapters installed behind the panel last year, so it runs off ship's power, and I still have an extra adapter behind the panel in case I decide I need anything else. I am going to look for a USB plate/hub that will go in that blank 2-1/4 hole so I can so updates, or hook up a mini keyboard.

Product Description
Its so small it fits in the palm of your hand! This space-saving mini keyboard with its compact key pitch requires less stretching of the fingers. The shorter keystroke uses less effort while keyboarding making it ideal for users who may have restricted arm, hand or finger movement. It is also great for small footprint computers or in tight spaces such as on server racks or at crowded LAN stations.

Too big. Think texting size, not typing size.

Is it possible to have a Droid-sized phone with a virtual keyboard on it that could talk to the display?

So basically instead of an AirDock you have created a FredDoc for the GPS?

Thanks Troy, not really liking that shape. Prefer the shorter but wider version. Plus it looks like I gotta do the FN+n to get the F-keys. Where the candyboard has them as their own keys.

I'm wondering about any side effects of the RF link. I like the Candyboard though.

I will find out when VFR. Easy enough to turn off once I've navigated through the menus and such. They run WiFi on airliners, so....

Got the candyboard in already. Circuit City - while having closed their brick and mortar stores, exists in the virtual world and was $20 cheaper than Best Buy. Bonus for me, they ship out of Chicago, so my order placed yesterday, already here today with normal UPS ground.

The unit does NOT work when connected solely via MiniUSB. That is only a connection for charging the battery. Which is fine because if this was on my yoke, I'm not sure the cable is long enough to connect to the panel anyway. You must have the wireless dongle connected. There are no drivers, it's recognized immediately as a keyboard on XP, so there's nothing to fuss with there. Range on it seems to be about 30 feet, and I did not get it to work from 36 feet. Although I can't tell if that was the limit because of the device, or the walls that got in the way. Of course in the little manual it says "Please do not operate or attempt to operate this device while on board an aircraft." Ha. That's what testing is for.

Does this require a 337?

Nope. It's not a permanent install. I don't even need tools to remove it. I happened to have the panel space the exact size needed for it already.

Please see attached. The USB A-B adapter snaps into the Mounting Plate.

You'd need to make the plate to fit the 2.25" hole, but this would mount in that plate and give you what you are looking for (along with a USB A-B cable that you are better off buying online)

(The diagonal measurement is under 51mm so it should fit.)

If you think there is a market for a complete kit - perhaps for any of the standard round hole sizes or by itself - let me know what you think they should cost and I'll see what I can do.

Is there a PN where I can have 2 USB ports?

In the qty column of your order, you put (2) :P

Let me check and get back to you.

No luck. I looked at other companies that have similar ports, but none have two ports and none are small enough to fit two into a 2.25" circle.

I do work with a company that makes a specialized USB memory stick that has an M12 connector on it (sort of like an industrial proximity sensor, if you are familiar).

Two of those ports would fit in a small space, but then you'd need a USB to M12 adapter to use the M12 memory stick with your PC. Too much of a hassle if you ask me...

I can probably make one myself. I probably have a spare USB hub I can cannibalize, and I just might be able to scrounge up some solder around here. Along with a Dremel and some aluminum I should be OK.

Sounds like a plan. Post pics when you are done.
