Lately I've been maintaining legal IFR currency through solo use of an ATD. I'm thinking that my proficiency would be helped by supplementing that with periodic IFR flights, because the need to communicate with ATC, deal with real-world wind and turbulence, etc., adds workload that isn't present with the sim. Flying IFR in VFR conditions means that I don't have to wait for IFR weather in order to accomplish that.
