Started the hike at 9,500’, 17°F and 5-10 knot winds. Got to my spot an hour later at 10,300’ and 37°F but winds kicked up somewhere between 30 knots and “oh my god I’m gonna die” gusts dropping trees around me. No exaggeration. So many beetle kill trees still sort of standing or partially down, hanging on other trees, just waiting to fall.

This story and pics make me appreciate the invention of the horizontally-opposed air cooled engine even more. ;) :D

Game Wardens frown on shooting elk from flying machines around here ... :D

Ah! We just thought you were out for a short stroll in the thin air. ;)
Any luck?

Pretty high country, is there much game that high?

At Winslow AZ last year, talked to a pair of bow hunters. Snow on ground, and one of them found Cougar tracks, felt less than comfortable without a gun.

None today. Really did turn out to be taking a rifle for a walk in the woods. I took a nice 6x6 there last year.

I was surprised to see no elk sign up high. This snow and cold is really our first of the year. I did find 1 set of tracks at about 9500’ so they might be moving lower now. Winter storm coming in tonight with 4-10” of snow forecast as well as 35-45 mph winds. Probably not venturing up there tomorrow.

Pretty pics. Nothing like getting up high, to clear the mind.
Surprised your temp increased 20°F in 800' & only 1 hour! Shade to sun?
