My nephew heads off to Great Lakes next week for boot camp, then on to who-knows-where. Is there such a thing as a "practical" gift at this stage? I know he won't be bringing much with him. ITunes gift card maybe? Visa gift card?

Definitely gift cards.

Writing paper, envelopes, pen, stamps.

But you likely will get the same look some kids give us when we talk about LP's and cassette tapes.

The phone card so he can call via a pay phone is a good one.

Rolls of quarters for laundry machines.

A nice framed photo of the family wishing him success.

A Monopoly styled "Get Out of Boot Camp Free" card, complete with home cooked meal.

Calling card, gift cards, skip the pens and papers.

Wait until after he graduates from boot camp to get him anything. He won't be downloading itunes or be buying anything he would need a gift card for while he is down there. If you really wanted to send him something, stamps would be good.

That's a good idea, too - no sense getting him anything he can't take with him or use while he's there. Just something else to get lost. That's the kind of advice I was looking for.

We ended up just getting him a card, we'll figure something else out later. He did send us a letter yesterday, all it said was, "Day 11 still alive".

Seriously.
