Near Falcon Field (KFFZ) Mesa AZ

Article above updated with Photo. Pilot landed in (shallow) canal (perpendicular to runway) about 1/2 mile from end of runway.

Bummer. Cardinal is a neat plane. Lots of loops before his return. Out of fuel??

Anyone look up the N number? Doc Peter flies a Cardinal

never mind

I looked it up, not Peter

I did a double take there, it reminded me of N747PA, the PanAm 747 that was the second one built. It famously flew into approach lighting structures on takeoff from SFO, badly damaging the aircraft and injuring several passengers.

It landed safely after dumping fuel, but without three of its four hydraulic systems and inoperative main body landing gear. The aircraft settled on its tail after landing due to the missing landing gear and an aft CG condition.

Boeing made repairs and N747PA returned to a long service life.
