I was on a boat tour in Kaua'i this past week and noticed that the boat's (27 ft. rigid-hull inflatable) compass really withstood the rough sea to the point where navigating via a course was no big deal. Why don't airplanes have ones that are just as stable? I guess they did way back when but the ones we use now are essentially useless in any sort of turbulence. Why?

Weight, plus......nobody ever looks at a whisky compass in an airplane.

Do any steep turns in the boat?

Vertical card works well for me
