Natural nuclear reactors

Cool, so if it's safe to let this stuff just go off underground, we could potentially use the heat produced from the buried waste by running a heat exchanger loop down hole. I've been proposing that for nuclear waste for a long time. However most of our nuclear waste in storage isn't anywhere close to being wasted and would be much more productive if reprocessed, the only question is what to do with the Plutonium now. The answer I have for that is, "Orion".

1970s, yes. A site was discovered in Gabon in 1972. There's a nice Wikipedia article. The signature is in the isotopeabundances.

There's another one found later, but I can't tell you where it is. Suffice to say it's got a lot, a lot, a lot of cooling moderator avail. Hard to do research on also.
