On Dec 14 -the email says- they will erase all our stored info but continue the email groups.
So it sounds like all past messages and files will poof.
The files are pretty easy to access and save.

How about all those messages?
Is there an easy way to save 10 years of email messages, from the site, in chronological order or at least by thread and ideally in an easily searchable format?

You can theoretically get your data here, though it's not in the most convenient format:

I went through that process and a couple of days later I got an error that they were unable to export my data.

You can transfer all your data to groups.io:
https://groups.io/static/transfer
There's a fee for that, though.

Non-techies needn't apply: "The project requires Python 3.5+, Mongo, and a computer with a GUI as Selenium is used for the scraping (to be able to handle private groups)."

Yahoo is sending our group a notice that they will deny all transfer requests to groups.io
