I have a device I want to connect to my computer.
I has a cable coming out of it with this connector at the other end.
My computer does not accept this connector, so I am looking for an adapter that will fit it and have a usb connector at the other end. (I can't be sure if the device is usb1.0 or 2.0 compatible but I know the computer is with both)

I see a lot of adapters on ebay (link below) but all the ones I looked at have the correct pin situation (9, male) but they all seem to have male threads like mine. How do I find one with 9 male pins and the 2 'nuts' to accept the male threads on my connector?
What term should I be searching for?

Highly recommend the Keyspan High Speed Serial Adapter - USA-19QW. It has the male pins and the female nuts, and is pretty much the only one that seems to work with everything. They may have a newer model, but the Keyspan product line is the way to go.

I bought one at radio shack to hook my Garmin 196 to the computer. I think it was under $10.

This is the one I use for my GPS. It is a Belkin F5U109. It has the male connector for the serial part and nuts for your screws.

I use a Belkin for the same purpose, same type. I picked it up at Circuit City. Windows XP recognized it without any difficulty.

Dave,

What is the device? You may need drivers as well.
It looks like a serial device (GPS maybe- looks like my cable). The low level drivers are built into Windows (and, I suppose, Macs and Linux). Serial never had a higher level driver- the program was supposed to know how to handle the data stream.

Some programs can't handle a COM port beyond 4. Mine often shows as COM5, but going into device manager will let you set the COM port to something your program can use. These COM ports often change when the adapter is plugged in- I haven't determined the pattern, but serial code used in MapSource picks up the GPS just fine. The diminishing number of software supporting serial communicatons has been generally rewritten to look determine the port the device is connected to.

Tim the replacement for usa19qw is 19hs
I notice it has usb version 1.1 but not 2.0, is that an issue?
'Plug and play' as if no drivers needed?
thanks

No issue with the USB1.1 as it's more than fast enough for any serial connection. There may be no drivers needed, and it should come with a cool configuration tool that will allow you to select which com port (including all the high ones like COM19) you want to use - very very handy as it makes the appropriate registry changes and you won't have to wonder which COM port it is if you plug it into a different USB port on the same laptop or PC.

I use one from Radio Shack for a SSB digitizer for a weather fax program, they make a long nut that both screws thread into.
