We are getting offers from this "freight reseller" at work; just wondered if it was a scam.

Probably just a Broker...who most of the freight movers are...and there are many more that are shady than legit out there.

do not comprehend their biz model.
Buy up shipping opportunities from UPS, Fedex, Lonestar etc etc then resell it to consumers with a margin?
Like StraightTalk and cell phone data/minutes resellers?

Unishipper is a broker of truck freight services. Concept is that as the billing agent, they can negotiate better rates than the individual because they show a much bigger dollar volume. They also have deals with all the major carriers and will shop them for the best rate based on distance and commodity.

Feightquote.com and CH Robinson are others in this space. We use the latter and they are able to save us money and considerable time over us dealing directly with the carriers.

I think Unishippers also does small packages that UPS and FedEx would handle.

Their monetizing model is a small margin, but massive volume.

StraightTalk is an MVNO on multiple carriers and that's quite different than a reseller. We'd need an evening with a lot of beer to describe how MVNOs came about and where they're heading (mostly being bought back up BY the parent carriers now as "discount brands". We'd also have to talk about WalMart's massive power over whoever sells cellular in their stores.

If you're bored, read about a year worth of posts at HowardForums.com forums about MVNOs and that still won't cover it all. But it'd be a good primer.
