See attached pic of scan results.
Avast reports unable to scan many files.
Not sure why or if I should do anything.
Operating nominally at this time.

Those are all Spybot backups (in case you ever want to reinstall your spyware, I suppose). I think Spybot password-protects and/or encrypts the backup files it makes when it scrapes the crud from a system. Either would explain why Avast is unable to scan them.

Just as an aside, how much stuff do you have auto-starting? You have lots of stuff in the tray, about half of which I don't recognize. Do you really need all that stuff running?

No, how do I decide?
I see
Local Area Connection (I never use)
Volume (use)
One that does not respond to hovering or r/l clicking
Another LAC
Lexmark Productivity suite (no use)
HDD Protection (shock sensor I think, not sure if I need)
Payclock terminal (I'll leave for now)
Protector suite (?)
Payclock server mgr (OK)
Synaptics pointing device (no idea)
Avast(use)
Toshiba zooming tool (no use)
Netscape (USE)
Secunia PSI (no idea)
Napster (never use)

How do I kill these things?

Probably CCleaner is the easiest way.

Under the Tools option on the left, you'll find a "Startup" option. Be careful what you delete or turn off, however; it's not always easy to determine from an item's name or path whether or not it's essential (or desirable) that it run at startup.
