So was there a real Major Tom? Why multiple songs about him?
Are they referring to the same person?

I preferred the Major Tom version by Peter Scolari.. er Tom Skerrit, or what's his face?

That is always the song I thought of whenst someone referred to "Major Tom".
"4 3 2 1 Earth below Us Drifting Falling, Floating Weightless..."
What a great Hook.

Are these completely unrelated and just a coincidence or did one guy write a song and another try to do it better? Any connection?

*Whenst should be a word. Past tense of Whilst.

That is Peter Schilling. My favorite version too.

The video for "Ashes to Ashes" is here:

This came out at the very beginning of the video era. I'd seen a number of other artists' videos, and for the most part they weren't very interesting. Then David comes along, spends some ridiculous amount of money making something utterly surreal, but amazingly entertaining. Pure David.

I grew up in the JSC NASA community from the mid 60's...My father was one of the old guys at 32 years old Joining JSC team and manned space flight from England and the Blue Streak Project with British Aerospace...there were a few Toms...talk about a childhood and the experience of youth through the Apollo years and a tight knit community of Astronauts, Controllers and Engineers....In my elementary school it was cool to have a slide rule...and we all knew how to use them by the fifth grade...he may be fictional but existed in all our minds from 1969 or so when Bowie released the song.

I remember my brother working problems with a slide rule, many pages of computations. Being a few years behind him, I missed that fun as the requirement was lifted and we all learned how to push buttons. LOL

It's probably some sort of sacrilege, but I like this 2010 version of Major Tom by Shiny Toy Guns:
