So I understand you can say to a telemarketer please take me off your calling list and they are obligated to do so.

If you are talking to a human.
How do you deal with the automated ones?

DoNotCall.gov and get caller and don't answer anything you do not recognize.

Lastly never EVER give you phone number out to any business for any reason. I use my desk phone at my office as my default phone number. I am almost never at that number. Anyone who is important to me has my real number or knows where to find it.

I not only get TM calls I get a lot of cold calls looking for jobs and asking me to speak at conventions and trade shows. This way they all get filtered.

Well I think I should be able to stop the recording with a code such as "*3" and get someone to respond, take care of my request to be removed from the list. And "##99" to send a 30000 volt electric shock to the CEO.

I'm getting the "You need to call today to get a better interest rate on your account!" calls from robots in Florida and Brunswick, I assume, in Canada.

Of course, they don't know WHICH account but I'm sure they'll be able happy to ask me for that information and more when the human answers.

I gotta assume that thieves don't care too much about Do Not Call lists, especially if they're not in the U.S.

This is really harming me because I WORK using my phone. I get one of these just as I'm about to join a meeting and I can't get the fricking thing to drop (you have to be on hook for 30 seconds) so I get to hear the bizzarro zone, "All of our representatives are busy but please hold..." THEY CALL ME, I CAN'T HANG UP, AND THEY TELL ME TO HOLD!

I have given the phone number from Caller ID to the http://www.fcc.gov complaint form. At least the teefs in Florida will have to change their phone number at their $multi-million "homestead" mansion next to OJ.

I plan to get a second line just for business. Whatta pain.

The TM problem is a big deal and it is one of the reason why I do not use wired phones very often. I think the wired carriers are really screwing the pooch on this. By catering to services where one has to pay MORE to not get calls people are just opting to wireless services which has FCC protection to stop TM calls to their numbers (see Wireless Communication act of 1997).

If I were a wired carrier I would offer the privacy services as part of the basic plan, perhaps even budle it with other services such as call waiting that people would want to pay for.

Last night Hubby got a call that was obviously a recording. As is standard in our home, he put the phone receiver down and waited for the strident tones to tell him they have hung up. It took more than an hour for the recording to quit. He did check from time to time during the hour and it was still going.

Have you told this to your congresscritters? If not, nothing will happen.

Aah!, the TM virus! Your statement is true. And I have found that to be pretty effective. Our phone number was infested with telemarketers worse than a desktop running Windows with no protection surfing porn sites. I took the time to get to a human as often as I could, made the request, and in about 3 months the number of TM calls has dwindled to maybe 3 per week. Better.

I have used two tactics. Listen to the speil. Many have a "push 1 to be connected to our operator" and then after a long delay: "push 9 to be removed from our list." Wait for it, then push the number. There is no downside to doing so as they obviously already have your number.

The other is to push 1 and talk to the operator after the long delay. Be polite, explain that you don't do business with anonymous callers and you want to know the name and address of the company and the TMer's name. You can usually suck them in to providing that information. Then tell 'em to put you on the do not call list, and that your brother works for the Attorney General. :D

Unfortunately this all takes your time and energy. Sucks but it does work.

That's what I'm talking about. Your end is supposed to drop the call when on-hook for 30 seconds.

An hour is downright dangerous. You should just wait in the fire until the caller is done.

Small thread hijack.

For some reason, some bill collector thinks that my cell phone is "brandons" and keeps calling. They have their number blocked (unknown caller). They call 2 or 3 times a day and normally I miss the call. Today I actually got it and got as far as "who is calling" and they hung up on me.
Since it is "unknown" is there anyway to find out who it is so I can CONVINCE them that "brandon" does not have this number!
Just more of an annoyance than anything, except for costing me a minute when I do answer.
I don't want to block all unknowns since some of my friends use Skype and that shows up as unknown also.
Thanks

There are ways to grab the phone number but you need access to the equipment at the switch and that means one of two things. You'll have to deal with getting your carrier to do the work to help you out (Lotsa luck), or find a friend that does not mind putting his job and freedom at risk to cull through CDLs to get the info.

IOW don't answer unknown caller calls let it go to vMail and then check your vMail. If it is someone you know call them back.

Also been through that only a lot worse. I had the dialer only occasionally get the message through privacy manager. I told the humans at the end to stop calling only 6 times. Each time THEY GOT NASTY...because you know, it's my fault that the previous owners of my house were deadbeats.

Report the phone number on the FCC complaint form. That worked for me.

Just so you know, it's blatantly illegal for collection agencies to operate that way. They don't care.

The last call was, "Why am I calling you?" Swear to god. That may have been the Lt. Columbo technique but it topped all.

I wish I had gotten a round tuit to sue them ta death.
