NA - Sports Authority Bankrupt

Only questions around here
1. will SA contionue to pay $6M for naming rights rights to Mile High Stadium
2. will some developer turn the Sports Castle into condos?

The Castle's been around for decades, local landmark.

Sports Authority was never a great store IMO. I think sporting goods stores are better when they are big corporate (and I say that reluctantly). I dont like the cluttered tendencies of the smaller stores. So many clearance racks of clothing and floor plan space exceeded make for a less pleasurable shopping experience. I will gladly pay more for an item at a neat and orderly store (read target).

They seemed sort like a bargain store without the bargain prices. But yeah, lots of competition. We just got an REI a, Field and Stream, and a Cabbalas. SA won't be the last I'll bet.

I posted just about a month ago about how awful SA was as a place to shop and groused about them killing Gart Brothers and the Castle -- how they'd turned an interesting "know everything" sporting goods store into a poor chain store with stuff you could buy anywhere and no identity. (Think Bass Pro or Cabelas for brick and mortar that have retained some sense of their own past as they grew.)

Then I read yesterday that SA filed Chapter 11.

I wouldn't shed any tears if they never emerged and went away.

Gart's and Dave Cook had character. SA is the WalMart of sporting goods and they don't even do it well enough to give them that much credit.

Would be nice to remove their name from Mile High Stadium, too. Sports Authority field, my ass.

Die die die.

SA never got the message, they tried to compete, prices where to high, and products where not of a high standard. They thought they could compete against wall mart, and the high end sports stores.

Not much you could get at SA you couldn't get cheaper at Walmart. Really junky stuff.

They were bought out in a leveraged buyout about 10 years ago. Odds are all their cash went towards paying off the buyout and there was none left to invest in the business. That happened to the company I work for about 8 years ago and it's taken a very long time to recover.

I thought "NA" meant you "need advice."

Too bad there isn't one closing by me. I need a new fairway wood.

non-aviation.

We don't have a SA around here. People are comparing it to Dicks and Bass Pro. Which is odd because I don't put those two in the same category at all. We have an MC Sports, that I like a lot.

Not a Dick's fan because it takes too long to check out. It's like Wal-Mart - several registers, but only one staffed. Only Dick's slows it down even more by asking for your phone number. I just wish places would check you out and let you get on your way.

I hate that BS. I also hate it when they ask for my e-mail. When they do, I just look them in the eye and say firmly, "No." Sometimes the resulting silence is awkward for them. But I get enough spam as it is. I don't want your crap, too. If I want something from you, I know where to find you.

Since the Broncos won the superbowl, maybe the stadium district can extract even more money from the next sponsor. But I did like the Sports Authority name better than Invesco.

Oddly, this has come up in the past. If they have a contract for several years, the fact that they are in bankruptcy precludes the stadium from cancelling their end even if they aren't paying. We had that fun with the USAir arena (aka the Capital Center) during one of USAirs many bankruptcies.
