Seems they could have a lot of applications.
Did a family camping trip this weekend. After fishing, kayaking, hiking, cooking, etc we decided last night to chill around the fire and tell stories until dark, then I broke out this little dvd player and we watched Star Wars (on the 7.5 inch screen) Thinking a pico proj and a sheet would have made for a cool evening (jiffy pop on the campfire of course) or even on the tent wall.

Also had the thought, it would be cool to have one on the headboard that projects on the ceiling.
We are not big TV watchers (Maybe 2-3 hours a week) but I have a bunch of ideas where it might make a fun movie night.

I have 0 experience w/ the small projectors and wonder if they are crap or not.
Ideally would be mobile (Batteries or rechargeable) have a way to connect to my portable DVD player or play a movie from USB or SD...

Not overly concerned about quality, just the ability to have mobile movie nights.

What say POA?

I'm not helping you get porn on your bedroom ceiling. Nope. Nope. Nope. LOL! :)

Seriously though, we've had some folks bring theirs into work. They're pretty dim, but if you can use them in very dark locations, they work okay. Lit rooms are iffy. At least with theirs.

I could ask the guy who does a lot of presentations and carries one as a backup, which one he has. He's not overly impressed with it, but he's had room systems crap out and uses it in a pinch.

I don't have one. But we just prop ourselves up with pillows and fall asleep to infomercials like normal people. Haha.

Isn't there a phone out now with one built in? Beyond that, I've got nothing.

They are a nice idea, but so far I haven't seen one sufficiently bright to get any decent throw or screen size to make it worthwhile. I keep hoping though, would be really useful to be able to throw one in my bag and carry.

Usually when I camp, it's to places that don't even have phone service. I go into the woods to get away from all the glowing rectangles.

This was just state park camping. We haven't graduated up to "real" camping. Maybe when the kids are a couple years older.

We take our children camping every summer, in the mountains close to Yellowstone Nat'l park. Last summer our youngest was only 8 months old. Put down a tarp on the ground, threw her toys out and she had a blast. Bear spray and a 1911 is taken for our hikes and fishing. Are you waiting for the kids to be old enough to bring their own cell phones?

We're the same way. We usually go camping twice a year - once with the kids and once without. Our oldest is only 4. We don't even really bring much in the way of toys anymore, because they're usually so enamored with all the rocks, sticks and streams that they don't play with them. That said, we definitely prefer our kidless trips more, at least until they get a bit older... easier to relax and soak our livers.

Aye Aye Aye... Didn't intent to start the critique my camping trip thread but since we have arrived there

We Fished

We trudged through swampy areas and got ticks

The little ones went where only the little ones would fit (ignore the fact that my daughter had to wear a swimsuit the whole trip. I pick my battles)

And for one very brief moment at about 10:30 PM after dinner smores and ghost stories, watched a movie on a small screen by a fire (The humanity!!!)

We did not fight a bear, pee on a jellyfish sting, catch snakes with our bare hands, light a fire by rubbing two sticks together.
We did not do a rain dance, walk on hot coals, swim with sharks, drink a puddle filled with elephant urine to survive.
We did not scale a mountain, make a rope form human hair, climb inside a volcano, or fish with spears we carved out of a tree branch.
We did not close a flesh wound by sprinkling gun powder in it and lighting it so cauterize it closed.
We did not participate in a game put together by a wealthy man who uses humans as his game and they have to try and survive while he is hunting them and only the winner gets out alive.
We did not make an official plan as far as who we would eat first if we were to find ourselves without food although I am pretty sure the rest of the family may have had a secret meeting about that and I wasn't invited.

I hated it when my kids were born and everyone kept saying "They grow up fast"
Now I totally get why people say it. You just have no idea how fast it goes by until you are a parent.

I feel like they were newborns last year. 9 years has gone by in a flash.

My brother has one and uses it all the time. The one thing I don't like is the bulb at least on his is not replaceable so it is a throw away when it dies.

But did ya watch any college football????

Just kiddin' Brian, great pics of the kids. Don't listen to the detractors, at least you're doing something WITH your kids. Many parents today hand 'em off to the grandparents so they can go off. I get onto my daughter all the time about enjoying her 6 year old before he's grown up.

Meh, I still hate that saying. Yes, my kids are growing up fast, but I soak up every second of them and don't take our time together for granted. They are growing up as fast as they need to and graying me appropriately.

When you get my age Cajun you'll understand why we say that maybe a little better. Glad you're soaking up your time with them.

One thing I like is that anytime we do something that is any sort of trip or memoriable experience, my wife makes a book of it.
So instead of photo albums, we have these hardback books (made by shutterfly I think) that tell the story of the trip. They are starting to pile up which is a good thing.

Yeah my daughter does that. They look great too, and she adds little captions for the pics.

No, I get it. But the fact that time goes by fast isn't a mystery to me. A lot of people don't know what they have until it's gone, but I'm not one of those people. Live and love to the fullest.

@SixPapaCharlie - I'm just giving you a hard time... at least you are doing stuff with your kids. More importantly, you should just go ahead and change the spelling of your first name already! ;)

I know right. I have quit correcting people. I will answer to either pronunciation as well.

That bites. I watch maybe 5 hours of TV a month but I like the idea of it being mobile though.

I have a gazebo out back with curtains that close.
Would be cool to sit out there by a fire pit and watch the cowboy's game. Lots of applications for mobile.
Seems the downfall is going to be the brightness.

Did you teach your kids how to run up and kick an armadillo? Double bonus points if you can roll one into another armadillo.
They are one of the clumsiest animals, they are pretty deaf and on the verge of being blind. They needed that shell for a reason.

There are LED projectors that are bigger and brighter (and still pretty cheap, but not pico size). LEDs will last 20,000 to 30,000 hours, so replacing bulbs should not be an issue. If you only want to watch TV or Movies, most of these will work. I you want to hook up a computer, a lot of them have very low native resolution (but claim 1080P for video).
You probably want over 2,000 lumens for use outdoors. A lot/most? of them 800x480 native resolution, so they will look crummy with a computer. Do you need a battery? Maybe just get a small UPS to power it while camping.

That's Disney theme parks, not camping. You mixed the two up there. ;)
