Completely non-aviation subject, but this is a pretty smart group.

Suggestions on best pepper spray to carry for self protection.

Not let’s not get political. Just asking for a product recommendation.

Bear spray is the same stuff, just a bigger can. So if you're thinking of going deep in the mountains, just buy some of that.

Have been lookout at non lethal self defense protection for traveling.

Have seen quote a few cautions about using pepper spray and if you use it you better be prepared to defend yourself further because unless you get a solid debilitating shot off which is difficult to do you now have an insanely irate assailant that if they were not gonna do you physical harm initially then sure as heck will now.

As part of military security force training I was required to be sprayed with pepper spray. After being sprayed we had to perform certain tasks and fight off an attacker. A very small percentage of the class was incapacitated by the spray and didn’t finish the course. An equally small percentage didn’t seem to be affected at all (I was among this group, the spray was no worse than having sweat get into my eyes). The vast majority, although affected, was able to fight through it and achieve their goal. We all knew ahead of time that we were going to be sprayed and that might have lessened the effect but I learned that in a serious situation pepper spray might be better than nothing, but not a whole lot better.

It sounds like people protection, not bears & such. If so, a small ‘Foxx Labs’ canister is enough, light, easy to carry. They are nice for stray dogs too, aggressive.

Look at State regs where you plan to go. The vast majority of the time, something is carried but never used, the benefit can be peace of mind.

I carry a small lead sprayer, but I used to have one of those tiny "keychain" cans of pepper spray. You need a much bigger than that, in my opinion.
Back in the day, when I used to ride a bicycle everywhere, I had a squirt gun full of ammonia for dog defense.

I can tell you that CS/OC gel works to buy you a few seconds which you can use to either
- get away.
- get to your baton to beat the crap out of your attacker.

(and I am not gonna run away and leave the guy with my cab. The stuff is a ***** to clean up though)

I've been sprayed about a half dozen times with pepper spray for similar reasons. The first time I was sprayed, it was probably one of the worst experiences of my life, and I could only think of one thing: get me some water on my face. But from the second time on, it was only a minor annoyance. I'm not sure if a person gets immune, or just used to the effect, but if I'm now sprayed, it really doesn't do anything physically worse than when I have to sneeze: eyes water, nose runs, maybe a red face, and that's it.

My .02...for similar reasons to the other two, I was sprayed. It sucked, but I fought through it and still subdued the training officer in the scenario.

in the real world, it’s typical to get as much of it on you and your buddies as the offender. Great way to wind up on the outs with your work crew, lol...

Of larger concern is that it only works on pain compliance. This does you no good with many of the mentally ill and/or drug users. In other words, many of the folks who would be likely to cause you to need it. Tasers can be more effective due to working on NMI vs mere pain (make no mistake, they hurt like hell too...but that’s not their primary method of function). The problem with Tasers are bulky clothing, poor dart spread, and/or contact tasing (where pain is the primary effect) can render it ineffective. Much like other trades, the reason officers carry so many different things is because there’s no “one size fits all” tool.

I think we’re talking casual protection, not LEO level of potential use.

The vast majority have never been sprayed, perps, animals, whatever, so they’ll react as the ‘1st time’.

Of course there are limitations, as with any method of defense. One is usually better with something, than nothing, and having an idea of how/when to use it.

Really not much difference. The human body can only process so much pain, so the difference in 1 million Scofield heat units and 2 million Scofield heat units, only really apply to marketing. Two biggest problem with pepper spray are 1) youll end up with cross contamination ie youll spray yourself too. 2) There is a delay in reaction from your aggressor during which time they may get their hands on you. Pepper gel or foam work better for the cross contamination issues but you have to be more accurate.

Bear spray is the same stuff, just a bigger can
I could be all wrong but Ive read and seen a few videos that indicate bear spray is definitely not the same..... and that it's not better against people.the things I've seen suggest that the stuff made for people will work better....but not against bears

I'm not expert so can't make any valuable suggestions, but i did recently do some research on the topic. Lots on youtube

They both have the same ingredient, Capsaicin (8-methyl-N-vanillyl-6-nonenamide).

It's actually a food product --you probably eat it, whenever you eat anything flavored with hot red peppers.

I'll agree that about 98% of the spray consists of something other than capsaicin (propellants and other stuff), so I one pepper spray product can differ from another, in that respect.

yes, but my understanding is they make it different......different formulations, prob also different spray patterns, etc.
bear spray according to a quick google search has a lower concentration of the capaicin because it doesn't need to be as strong.
Again, I'm only repeating what I've read...I'm no expert

Apparently a lot of folks prefer the gel type for self defense against humans

The spray is actually a mixture of related compounds. I extract peppers and use the extract to demonstrate techniques and procedures applicable to other natural product extracts. As your references indicate, they don't do much purification of the extract, which is rather potent on it's own.

This shows the extract has at least 4 related casaicin-type compounds:

It may be of interest to the thread to note that capsaicin is used to reduce pain:

Kinda like hitting your thumb with a hammer makes your headache go away? ;)
LOL, that might be the mechanism to reduce headaches in the WebMD link:
To treat headaches, you'll dab a bit inside your nostrils.

For the other applications, to over-simplify, it is believed to deplete some neurotransmitter so the nerve can't tell the brain there is pain. the nerve makes more neurotransmitter, apply more cream, and the neuron "gets tired" again.

Bee and hornet spray can be blinding and shoot a long way... I keep scan by my bed. It’s not practical to carry with but couple around the house are not a bad idea
