I bought a metal framed door for my wood stud building. The frame has a number of 5/16" holes around it, to attach the frame to the building. It came with hardware to attach it to masonry (expanding bolts) which I cannot use on wood.
The door mfg does not have the correct wood hardware.
It needs 4" x 5/16"dia (ie #20) countersunk head wood screws but I do not see such a thing in my searches.

Go down to the hardware store and get what works off the shelf. LOL

I did see those but eyeballing them do you think they are really a 5/16" shank dia? Look too skinny. Thanks
Right, Greg. :)

Wow, I looked as well and that is a tough one for a #20. Ron's link is the closest.

Question though...if it came with masonry expanding hardware I would assume that those are hex head bolts to use with the masonry anchors...if so, any reason a 5/16"x4" hex head lag screw would not work in the wood?

Is the clearance of the countersunk head critical for installation over a hex head or is that just what the paperwork said to use?

Shawn, the screws for the masonry anchors are countersunk phillips head machine screws.
I think they are CS so that people don't catch clothing or skin on the raised heads.
There is a dimple in the frame to accommodate the countersunk head.
I think I need to use cs washers and smaller dia screws I guess. Or bush the holes smaller somehow.

Mcmaster carr has number 16 or 0.268 flat head screws in 4 inch or longer lenghts. Would they work might just sit slightly lower in the recess

They should be 3/8" x 5" but some guys sneak 4" in depending on application. If you really can't find any locally send me a message. I buy them in bulk.

It's west Texas, it never rains. Whaddaya need a door fer?

The only time it rains is when there is a 30mph+ gust front from a thunderstorm, so the wallswindowsdoors get a soaking and the wind pressurizes the exposed surface, blowing the water into any cracks available.

Call a nearby commercial door shop and get the right screws. Common stuff.

Yuk yuk? Use a telephone to call a door shop and get the right stuff from somebody who knows what you need.

The reason for the chuckle was you said a nearby door shop. There might be one 3 hours away; my nearest city.
I did a google search using my zip and got some unlikely hits in California etc.
(If I could find a promising shop, I would call them even if they were in Alaska.)
I see what I need on ebay though.
Thanks all, I think this is resolved!

3/8 x 5 is the size. Normal retail is about $2.00 each. I've been in the commercial door business all my life. :-)

Bubba said he has some large hardware for ya Doc.
