NA - Gold nearing $3,000!

Why did the same massive increase happen for Google? And, frankly, even if google didn't have something similar happen during summer 22, a USPS change doesn't seem likely to have increased amazon volume by a factor of 10 for three years in a row.

Idk, I’m just a high school educated hick… who sees patterns in things…

Got it! Amazon and Google both did huge stock splits summer of 2022. So the volume of shares being traded increased massively for the same volume of dollars.

I will even go one step further and double down, “shoot the moon” as my father would have said and say I strongly think the price spread between gold and silver will open up this coming week, most likely in the first few days of trading. But I am over due for being completely wrong.

Gold currently at $5,086.40. Silver at $108.83.

Unbelievable. I was pushed a news article claiming the rush to metals is caused by fear of a global financial crunch due to excessive and unsustainable debt levels worldwide. Whatever it is, while anyone holding metals is sitting pretty, it may portend a rocky future in financial markets globally.

I bought a large (for me) quantity of gold at the beginning of the year at around $4,350. I''m having a hard time trying to decide if I should take some profit now, or let it ride a while longer. I've never been very good at timing the market. I'm just wondering what the group feel is for the future of gold.

I consider gold a long term hold until retirement (I'm 63 and expect partial retirement in a year or two, then full retirement). At that point, I will sell whatever asset makes the most sense at the time I need the money. If stocks are depressed and gold held value, gold gets sold if I need income. I also had considered it a hedge against inflation but, as of three weeks ago, my PM holdings were up 48% or so on the year....that, I didn't anticipate. Turns out it would have been a great speculative investment. The decision to hold or sell would be influenced if you bought it speculatively for a short term play or as a retirement vehicle.

Eddie...maybe time for a thread title change?!? :)

My opinion… I would not sell it now ( or the near future)

Perhaps I left out: I am 73. Almost 9 yrs retired. I'm not pleading poverty, but I have to make what I have last until I am 99. (I have no confidence I will make 100).

In that case I’ll be honest, depending on family situation I would be personally seriously looking into belieze, or the federated states of Micronesia if cost of living is the main concern (both English speaking) or a country with nationalized healthcare if medical bills are the main concern. (To be fair my opinion on this is probably biased by going on close to a week straight of dealing with double digit negative windchills and the long term forcast isn’t looking much better… a nice affordable hut with some chickens, pigs, a big garden and a short walk to a small fishing boat on a tropical island in the South Pacific is looking better by the hour).

Edit: one of the Micronesian islands has a prohibition against alcohol, I’d avoid that one. I think that is the same one that once a year all the women are expected to dress traditionally in grass skirts and be topless. I am married and have had enough head injuries already to not need another one by getting hit in the head with a frying pan by my wife:).

The rule of thumb I’ve heard is that an ounce of gold can always buy a nice men’s suit. Maybe a Savile Row bespoke suit, or maybe a made to measure suit at you local tailor on Main Street.

Looks like the hangar is coming sooner than later ;) . However, I won't relax until gold flattens, or has a little dip; I don't see this gravy train going on forever. I could kiss my PM firm for buying all the silver that they did when I first jumped in to the pool. They're looking like genius' today.

Silver is so high, I think the melt price has eclipsed any numismatic value of many of my coins. I've been kicking around the idea of selling some of my silver to buy Ethereum. Anyone else in this boat?

Not I.

Are you anti-crypto? Or just not willing to part with any silver?

I resisted crypto for a long time. But the more I look at it as a store of value, I think it's worth having maybe just a little bit.

I was enrolled in one of the online programs for a while. One of the electives in my program was and introductory class in crypto currency and blockchain technology. I was curious, so I signed up. I'm not selling a bunch of core investments to by Dogecoin by any means. But, having a little Ethereum or Bitcoin on a hard-wallet and maybe the ability to create my own tap-n-go QR code just might be the next SHTF keepsake like junk silver was when we all worried that the financial markets were gonna crash from the millennium bug.

Etherium has the advantage of being a real product, it's programming language Solidity used to create contracts & transactions. It's being use in Europe and Nigeria (scary!) as well as the US. If you know any C/C++ or even JavaScript it's really easy to learn.

Some general trivia...

Gold:
Jan 22. $4977
Jan 29. $5887. at midnight

Up over 12% in one week

What do people think of Peter Schiff? In a recent interview he made a lot of sense discussing fiat currencies etc. and got me rethinking PM. In the second interview he seemed a little too obsessed w/ gold and selling his own gold-related products.

I don’t think silver is done moving rapidly (in either direction…..) but with it’s current ratio to gold I think it is now time to trade it up. Gold will be more stable, and I have a feeling that will be a common trend. Driving gold higher and silver lower and spreading the gap back out. $103? I do not think that accurately reflects industrial demands on physical holdings but is more speculative at this point. Industrial demand can disappear when it becomes unprofitable and then speculators will be left holding the bag. (Just the opinion of an uneducated rural Iowan…).
As the decline of the dollar is essentially preprogrammed in, I would not rule out much higher prices for both and I believe it could happen with more speed that what most are ready to accept. Your point about industrial demand, especially regarding silver, is a fair one. I suspect the reality of a recession will no longer be subject to disguise in the next 6 months.

Peter is on a high note at the moment. But good for him, he has been speaking real facts for decades and has been routinely mocked. I do not agree with his take on bitcoin, but I am not aware of any argument he has made in favor of gold or silver that has been wrong.

Unlikely these levels are a peak.

When I started this thread back in March of last year, I thought $3,000 could have easily been a "peak", and that buying the 2 gold coins I did at that point was a bit risky.

At this point, all bets are off.

You probably started the most important thread on this site.

Planes take money.

Money needs to be preserved and multiplied.

Having started around 1800-2000, I just sort of keep a macro-view on these sorts of assets.

As long as we have dollar debasement and chaos, I suspect holders of gold in particular will thrive.

The ups and downs, sort of make me laugh----gold price fluctuations are usually very minor compared to bio-tech, let alone bitcoin.

"Oh, gold is down 200 dollars"---and they act like its melting--hilarious.

I guess everyone had the same idea. The local shop that buys gold and silver told me today that he can't buy any more for a while. And most other shops aren't buying either. I'm just a day late and a dollar short again!

I just came across this YouTube video, showing the difficulties some coin dealers are facing now.

Just think of the liquidity stress on small shops from this. Same with refiners. If they are being stressed and getting to the point they are stopping buying what will that do to the traded bullion bars. No more coming in while the markets reserve vaults are still being drained by delivery demands….(remember these physical assets are still leveraged and traded at larger volumes exceeding physically real quantities despite the CME’s multiple recent changes in leveraging limits and futures contract limits) what will that do the market price? The hunt brothers were easy to stop, it was one entity basically, this is different….

All bets are off now, it is knocking on the door of $80/ounce, but I am personally inclined to be of the position “strong hold”. Not necessarily buy, but hold and see what happens first quarter of 2026.
December 28th. Again I will say that today I feel another “strong hold” feeling, wait and see what happens. the rules keep changing for trading…..

I guess I figured the dealers would always be willing to buy and sell, since they make money on the “spread” regardless. But there are a handful of other videos getting pushed to me now confirming the squeeze they’re finding themselves in.

I guess this could make a case for holding “junk silver”. If things got really out of hand, bartering a silver dime - which Gemini tells me is today worth $7.22 - for products or services rendered could be easier than a $5,000 gold coin or a precious metal bar. If the past is prologue, that’s roughly how it worked in 1920’s Germany when a loaf of bread could be millions of paper Deutschmarks or a single silver one mark coin.

This looks like an interesting read:

I’m not a survivalist, but any time one assumes “things are different now”, it’s healthy to remember that things are virtually never different this time. As we’re finding out, many of the safeguards and guardrails we thought we had in place have turned out to be largely illusory.

This is what I'm struggling with. I bought a bunch of silver back when I WAS a survivalist for exactly this purpose. Ironically even though civilization is in worse shape than back then, I'm less convinced that the S is about to HTF. I guess as I get older I'm less interested in defending my stash of ammo and MRE's while society collapses. Anyway, my little silver stash has more than tripled in value to the point it could buy a pretty decent car. I'm inclined to dump it, but it seems like such a pain to go collect it all together from its various storage locations, drag it all to a coin shop, and then they are probably only going to pay like 85% of spot in this environment (and who could blame them?). I'm hoping it stabilizes enough that I can convert it this year into my new favorite investments: Garmin and Lycoming.

And while I’m not either, I suggest reading Nicholas Talieb’s Black Swan-at least the introduction and first chapter-though the entire book is excellent. Things always remain largely the same until they don’t. He talked of having relatives displaced from Lebanon in the early 80s still living in hotel rooms in Greece and Italy 20 years later convinced things would return to normal “shortly”.
