NA Facebook Safety Question

Ever since they got caught using FB Message to browse through a users computer, I have been reluctant to use it. I keep an old iPad with almost nothing on it to occasionally log on. That is inconvenient, and I would like to keep up better.

I know Apple made some push to protect its users, but not sure where all that stands. Is FB at least marginally controlled on IOS devices?

"Old" iPad, as in a now unsupported version? Might be better served with one that's getting updates that include security fixes.
