So if I guy a 300gB EHD, I will plug it into my Toshiba notebook and..... it will appear on the desktop, and I can add and remove files to/from it just like it was another folder?

Can my wife also plug into it and do the same with her notebook?

Can we both use it at the same time?

What is the fastest connecting wire between the two? Can I use the catV jack? Or is my USB the best?

Yes.

Yes. She'll see it holding the same data as you see.

No. There's only going to be one connection into the HD. You have to plug into one, then the other. You're thinking of a file server.

Firewire, then USB 2, then USB 1. Cat 5 will not be an option for an external drive unless it's on a file server.

They make stand-alone hard drives with a Cat-5 interface now. Slightly more pricy than a USB.

In that case, you could use hang it anywhere on your network... as for sharing, don't know, but I'd think it should be possible.

Not necessarily. Network Attached Storage (NAS) offers basic file sharing using either a Linux or Win core and web configuration, all via standard TCP/IP and Ethernet.
