During the Summer, we had a good discussion of whiskeys and bourbons.

With the cold weather upon us, I've been considering adding a good brandy to my cabinet. Maybe a cognac too.

Any suggestions on what to purchase?

My daughter gave me a glass of her husband's Portuguese brandy. It was very nice and also reasonably priced. I'll get you the name next time I'm over to see her.

What makes a nice brandy is pretty subjective. I've always been partial to a nice Armagnac, myself.

Don't do Brandy or Cognac, but what was the thread on Bourbon? THAT I do :)

I'm partial to Asbach Uralt for special occasions. Otherwise, I just keep some E&J G VSOP around.

Oh my god, Armagnac. A questionably drinkable form of turpentine.

I've never really been much of a brandy person myself. There are a couple of Cognacs that I like okay in small amounts.

Courvoisier VSOP or XO is my usual choice though E&J have some good drinks. There are a few Armanacs that I have found to be good. Currently though, I have a Hardy Napoleon opened.
I had a friend that liked to mix Hennesey with Coke. Claimed it was because it lasted longer that way. I know, though, anything added to a good liquor alters the flavor as does heat or cold.
Experimenting is always preferred.

I toured the Remy Martin factory when I was in France. They make some pretty nice stuff (if you like Cognac which I'm not overly fond of) and also some related beverages that look pretty interesting.

I opine the world of grape-based after dinner drink drinkers are divided into two groups...brandy and port. I am in the port camp.

We keep an E&J XO Extra Smooth brandy on the shelf. I'm sure there are better ones out there, but it's got a good price point, we like it, and it goes well in the cider and cooking we do with it.

Back in my younger days I occasionally quaffed some Remy, also known as French gasoline. Strong stuff. I liked rusty nails too. My tastes in beer rested more with the unwashed masses. Rolling rock or bud. My wife used to get gassed on one brandy Alexander. Loved em. I retired from that scene in 1979 but remember some great times interspersed with not so good times. Wish I had what I spent then.

Delemain Cognac. The smoothest cognac I have found! But not the cheapest...

Cognac is a Brandy...
Like Bourbon, Scotch, or Champagne, Cognac is a brandy from a particular part of France, the town known as Cognac. That doesn't really stop some people from assuming Cognac is something other than brandy. Armanac is just another brandy but one not from Cognac.
And marketing would have us believe Napoleon is a better brandy than an XO. It just depends on who you ask.
Since tastes change, there are days I could enjoy a good brandy eggnog but I am hardly going to put a $200 bottle of Cognac into a holiday milk!

Bourbon and Scotch aren't really geographical names, though they must be produced in the US and Scotland respectively. Champagne and Cognac (and the Armaganac mentioned) are.

And just to be perverse, you'll find the term Champagne used with Cognac even though it's a long way from where they make the bubbly. There are two regions within Cognac called Champagne (Grande Champagne and Petite Champagne). You'll see Fine Champagne on some Cognacs if it comes primarily from these two regions. The word derives from a description of the chalky soils in the regions.

Grappa. I save it for when I'm working on a Guzzi or a Ducati.

Uhhhh..... That wasn't much of a thread on Bourbon. When ther is more mention of 2-3 year old stuff from Texas, and no mention of 12-15-20-23 year old stuff from The Van Winkle family, you haven't covered the topic.

And then you had people recommending Crown and Cutty...... Smh.

Well I am always willing to learn. Please enlighten us with your knowledge of bourbon. As far as van winkle they had 196 bottles stolen from the factory.

These are a good start for the new year.

Jose,

When does the party start and what should I bring?

It was special order in, $370 of goodness, and the clerk checked my iD, as if some 19-20 year old would even begin to appreciate something that started aging while they were in pre-school.

Sad part, even tragic, was another bottle of the Eagle Rare 17 was tragically destroyed in transit to the local store, lost far too young.

Only thing missing from that photo is the Sazerac 18. Just wasn't available in the state.

Who rarely drinks and has a two drink limit. I do like quality bourbon and tequila though.

I'll have you know I had my first and only drinks ever when I was in Montreal a couple weeks ago.
