[NA] And here I thought Waco was this sleepy little town...

Sleepy little town? Home of the Branch Davidians? Remember that little incident with the FBI 20 years ago?

Twin Peaks shooting, Fort Hood shooting, Branch Davidians, Luby's Diner shooting Kileen just down the road... WTF is in the water down there?

Never seen a little town with 150,000 residents, sleepy or otherwise.

Sac, the Branch was (and still is!) located some 10 miles out of town. Last I looked, they were fighting with TxDOT because they thought there was a conspiracy to build a highway through their land.

If you want a sleepy little town, you go to West, some 30 miles north. At least until the local employer blows itself up.

Waco is a big college town, hardly sleepy at all.

I think that ship has already sailed.

When I was at Hood, I don't remember ever having a reason to go to Waco. We always used to hang out in Austin, which was a cool party town.

Perhaps about fifty years ago it was a "sleepy little town". Sure ain't today.

Austin isn't nearly as weird as it once was, but it's still a pretty nice place. But the locals will readily tell you it's not in Texas…

You mean the Ft. Hood soldiers don't take field trips to the Texas Ranger museum?

Yes, you're quite right. A city qualifies as mind-numbing when the most interesting thing it has to offer is a really ugly suspension bridge, and a museum to a soft drink manufacturer that left many decades ago.

Well, if it makes you feel any better, their local radio news isn't much. We passed through Waco about 2p yesterday. When the traffic first slowed down, we thought it was just your normal weekenend wreck on 35. Then we saw the blocked-off exit ramp and the policeman with a rifle. Next we saw all the police cars all lit up. Couldn't tell what was going on so we tried to tune in a local radio station. Nothing but your typical Sunday afternoon financial planning talk shows and radio preachers (not always mutally exclusive, I know). No Les Nessmans or anyone else reporting anything out of the ordinary.

A lot of those gangs peeps weren't from Waco, though. I bet it was interesting at various businesses across Texas when Mr. Tough Guy (TM) didn't show up for work today!

Looks like this is between the bandildos and the cocksacks. Head story on CNN

There are very few 'local' radio stations. Beyond maybe an engineer, the stations are unattended during the weekends and just stream whatever format they are on from a small stack of hard-drives.

I drive through Waco every few months. Stop at the Walmart for gas, and just keep on going. It's one of the strangest places in TX. Trying to be a college town, trying to be an old west town, trying to be a modern metro alternative to DFW. Trying to be more than a gas stop on 35... Failing at all of them.

There's a nice river through town, and a decent if not spectacular college, but aside from that, don't bother.

As far as the shoot-em-up, it seems like biker v biker, with no humans involved. Meh, aside from messing up the titty bar a bit, I'd say on the whole it was a net positive. Got 9 bikers in the ground, and ~200 arrests for various things. Next time they should host the biker GTG at some out of the way park, or wilderness, and just let them have at it until they run out of bullets.

Wonder if the cops did any of the killing? That might be interesting.

It would be a good use of public money to re-supply them with more bullets if they start to run low.

They should channel that anger, join forces, and cross the border to kick some ISIS ass at their alleged training camp in Mexico.

These are fat, lazy, smoker, middle age slobs with no sense of duty beyond a misplaced fealty to another fat, lazy, slob one small step higher up the food chain from him, but below the lowest layer of common mangy mutt in the dregs of the ghetto.

Waco is the only town I've ever been in where the hair on the back of my neck stands up just crossing the city limits. I hate Waco.

I spent my freshman year of college at BU. MC gangs weren't an issue back then, but the Baptist Gestapo on campus was a pretty rough outfit!
