One of the bass speakers quit this week (broken thing #4298) and it has a labelled wattage of 60W per channel, 120W total. (we have two speaker cabinets each with two speakers)

My wife took it RadioShack (the only place for 150mi that might have one) and they sold her one that looks the same, fits the holes BUT it says, 700W!

Will it work?
Will it hurt anything in the long run?
Will it sound different from the other speaker?

:dunno:

Thanks (she bought a replacement dvd player too, I am knocking out the broken things left and right)

Yes.

So long as the watt capacity of the speaker is greater than the watt capacity of the box that drives it, no. How about impedance? Do either specify ohms?
Will it sound different from the other speaker?
Probably. Sound quality technology changes pretty rapidly with time.

Everything looks good.

The 700W is a max thing, no problem.

The only problem you might have is if the music supply is 8ohms to the speaker.

Any modern solid state amp will drive 4 ohm speakers just fine. The acutal output impedance of a solid state amp is usually less than 0.1 ohm. The real limitation is the maximum current the amp can supply to a low impedance load and the maximum voltage it can supply to a high impedance one. Unfortunately these are rarely specified although they can be measured. Also FWIW speaker impedance varies considerably with frequency. High end speaker impedances are usually specified as their minimum impedance but often times it's the average over the frequency range of the speaker or the impedance at 1 khz. The impedance/frequency function of a single driver also changes dramatically with the enclosure. And WRT replacing a driver, if a multi driver speaker assembly has an internal crossover network (not bi-amped) the frequency response of the assembly will probably change unless the replacement driver is an exact copy. At the very least you should replace the same driver in both speakers of a stereo pair to maintain spatial expression.

I think I will return it.
Darn thing was $60.

Dave:

Why return it? It oughta work for you.

You can, of course, buy a cheap-ass replacement, but that is something easier to do in Dallas or Houston, than in Marfa or Ft. Stockton!

It certainly ought to work for you.

very cruel, Ed!

Well that's me I guess (although I will profess to my death that I always buy GOOD stuff, take care of it VERY well).
I guess I can live with bad karma, as long as it steers clear of my airplanes!
