View from the deck of the apartment I'm staying at in San Fran. Bagel, coffee, the bay and the bridge. Life is good.

yeah. definitely beats the 20 deg weather I have today. Go buzz the bridge and Alcatraz. I did it! :)

Plan was to do that yesterday but solid layer of fog, couldn't even see the rock from pier 39.

Enjoy the view while you can. You are in San Francisco the best time of year there is and very soon it will plunged into daily fog and overcast. No doubt all the locals are walking around complaining about how hot it is! A lot of San Franciscans don't like heat, or even sun shine all that much.

Looks like you're maybe in the Marina, Nob Hill, or Russian Hill?

One of my favorite hiking places is in the background. Marin Headlands. Every once in a while I'll pack a bottle or two of wine, hike up Hilltop 88, chug it, and chill with the scenic view.

Since you like the Marin headlands, have you ever been to the Nike Missile Site up there? Absolutely worth the trip. Really, really cool piece of nicely preserved Cold War history. Fully functional launch elevator and numerous missiles, spinning radar (non functioning) and park rangers that are very knowledgeable about what it was all about.

The truth of that installation will really make you appreciate how lucky we all are to be here now. All of the equipment and displays were assembled from junk collected all around the country and some of it outside the country by volunteers. It is the only remaining site of it's type in the country.

If you like history and you like machines and technology, you owe it to yourself to go visit next time you and your wine make the trek. I have loads of pictures I could size for the net if anybody is curious.

Yeah I've seen it a few times. Pretty fascinating. Hilltop 88 is one of the launch and radar facilities, what's left of it. There are something like 120 of those identical sites scattered all up and down the coastal hills of California.

The tour of Battery Townsley is pretty interesting too. They used to have 16 inch guns pointing out to sea, criss crossing the sister battery at Fort Funston in South San Francisco. Back when they were operational, the guns could clear the Farralones, which are 23 miles out. They were reputed to be able to hit a barge size target on the first shot, 20 miles out. The radar facility that controlled it is in the first bunker as you walk up the trail from Rodeo Beach.

Not legally unless you were a Blue Angel 20 years ago.

It isn't observed by anyone that cares, there is a lot of room and sometimes it's the only way to get south VFR, low over the water close inshore.

Can you get down to Palo Alto during the day Monday? You need a bay tour real bad.

Thanks a lot for the offer but I'm heading back to Charlotte tomorrow morning. I'm really bummed it didn't work out for us but we still ha a blast today. Will post pics soon.
