I shoot defensive handgun a lot. Anyplace in the FR to shoot any type of IPSC/IDPA match without
dropping a huge range membership fee?

Thanks.

TC

I used to shoot IPSC years ago but I'm a little confused by the question. What's a Front Range?

The first range of mountains in the transition from prairie to mountainous region is called the front range. When in the US and it's capitalized, Front Range, then it's the range of mountains west of the the region from about Colorado Springs to Fort Collins.

You're welcome.

^^^ I thought for a while there they had those open to the public. I'll have to ask around.

I also thought Ben Lomond GC and a place up near Idaho Springs had open IDPA matches.

BL just had someone start a prairie fire that took off doing something stupid out there, so I don't know their current overall "status". Just been following the Sheriff's PRs about the brush fire. I suspect some idiot was playing with Tannerite against their range rules.

If you don't find IDPA stuff make sure to check with USDPA also. For some reason there's an odd mix of popularity between the two around here lately. But both seem to have very few open matches.

Some of that may be driven by liability coverage at the ranges. Everyplace wants a twenty page document filled out these days to go plink.

I put off doing the competitions at Centennial because they didn't fall on the correct night of the week for me. Maybe with the upcoming job change I'll be able to schedule it in better.

Front Range is the eastern half of Colorado that is used as a shooting range and marijuana fields. DUH! LOL

Nah. The grow houses are completely commercial and mostly in warehouses in Commerce City near the refinery. It's a lovely place. Really. :)

Nobody can get workers to grow plants on the eastern plains unless they're crazy enough to farm in a high desert. Nor can they get enough water rights to build one out here. Or enough electricity from the co-op for the grow lights. And what would the big city do if the road to the grow house was covered in a blizzard and the supply was interrupted? The pot heads need their fixes man.

Way better to grow that stuff in town. Keeps the supply chain shorter.

Most of the land is privately owned so shooting ranges are in short supply out here too, unless you know someone who owns a ranch or farm. In my county, 10 acres is required to shoot on one's own property, but I've seen that rule bent a little. All depends on if the neighbors are the sort that hearing a rifle banging gives them the city-style heebie-jeebies where they think they need to call a cop. Sheriff will enforce but the dispatcher would probably put it well below most other calls unless a car was nearby. Waste of their time out here.

Pawnee National Grasslands is your best bet for shooting without a buddy that owns a ranch or a farm. Unless you enjoy trespassing charges or a rancher sighting you in with his shotgun for bugging his cattle. Please clean up your mess when you're done shooting there, unlike the city morons who leave trash everywhere after they've been out there. There's a public range attached to the grasslands that's pretty quiet anytime it's not a weekend day.

The other place I've been meaning to get to is the nice big range on one of the entrance roads to Ft. Carson. Apparently it's pretty nice. Outside the base gate, so always accessible, and open to the public.

Nate,

Ft Carsons range is nice, and under $10/day to shoot. Closed on Mondays, so keep that in mind.

I'm a member at Magnum Shooting Center over by the USAFA (active duty got membership fee waived on Veterans Day). Nice place to shoot, but no competitions.

IDPA/IPSC and 3 gun shoots out east at a couple of ranges regularly but again, I don't know if they're open for the public, or members only. Golden Gun Club, Kiowa Creek and Colorado rifle club come to mind. Great Guns near Nunn has events as well, I believe.

Good to know on Carson's stuff. I need an excuse to get the rifles out.

And my membership at CGC is somewhat on the fiscal chopping block if I'm leaving my job for aviation fun for a while. We can afford to keep them but I'm not going as much as I should right now to say it's "worth it". It's great in bad weather but there's so many good outdoor ranges closer to home and cheaper (and a few so-so indoor ranges toward the Parker direction) that CGC may not be the long-term best for what I'm doing.

One of the reasons we chose CGC was back when Karen was getting into shooting it was really close to home and nice and we joined long before they built the full new facility, so our buy in was super low, but she has since then been to "seedier" ranges (haha the Shootist comes to mind... Cruising down into that basement you wonder for a minute if they keep "the Gimp" down there, but they're nice folks and the range really is just fine) and doesn't care too much anymore if it's a fancy place or a dirt berm with a target set up.

We've joked that we just need 6 more acres of land... And that'd take care of it.

Also joked that if we ever build the long barn for the fifth wheel that it needs a basement... A basement that strangely has lots of soundproofing materials and a big pile of bullet stopping material at one end of it... And a cable between two pulleys and a binder clip hung from the basement ceiling... Heh heh.

Just a coincidence all that stuff would be down there of course, you'd need a permit to build an actual range... ;) Nope. Just random stuff in a basement under the garage... :)

Let me if/when you want to try out either place down here. I live by KFLY and work on Carson. I've got guest passes at Magnum (25/100 indoor). Carson has ranges out to 600, but .300WMAG and .338 are limited to 300 due to backstops. .50, if that's you're flavor, is not allowed. I could go into the details of why, but that gets into Army math and it's all fubar after that.

As for what's in your basement, what the inspector doesn't know won't hurt him. Soundproofing? Studio for the band.
